Softball Shuts Down FIU

MIAMI, FL -- Florida Atlantic University used early scoring and a stifling pitching performance by Amanda Morin en route to a 3-0 victory Tuesday night at Florida International University in Miami, FL. The win improved FAU to 28-24 overall. Ebony Gray and Pam Mazzarella each drove in runs for FAU while Morin threw her fifth shutout of the season.

FAU broke through in the first. With one out, Ginny Matthews and Pam Mazzarella reached on back-to-back singles. With two outs, Callie Piper loaded the bases with a walk. Ebony Gray capitalized with a double to drive in Matthews and Mazzarella to make it 2-0.
 

 

The same cast helped add to the lead in the third when Matthews led off with a double and came home on a single by Mazzarella to give the Lady Owls a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, FIU (28-20) led off with consecutive singles, but was unable to advance the runners after two pop-ups and a strikeout. In the seventh, FIU put runners on first and third before Morin retired Heather Taylor with a strikeout.

Morin picked up her fifth consecutive win. The freshman improved to 13-11 on the year while throwing her second shutout this season against FIU. Morin allowed six hits and struck out six with no walks.

The game was the sixth this season between the two teams as FAU tied the season series at 3-3. FAU outhit FIU, 10-4, including a double in each of the first five innings. Matthews went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while Mazzarella also finished 3-for-4.

Florida Atlantic next faces Jacksonville University Thursday evening at 5:00pm in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader.
