Northwestern Holds on for 2-1 Win over FAU
Sept. 9, 2007
BOCA RATON, FL - Brittany Comer scored off a corner kick by Susanna Lehtinen but the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team couldn't overcome an early two-goal deficit and fell 2-1 to Northwestern University at FAU Field to close out the FAU Classic on Sunday. NU took the early lead in the 21st minute thanks to a nice passing play started by Kelsey Hans. Hans delivered the ball to the left side and Krystal Patterson found Alicia Herczeg in the middle of the box who tapped it into the goal for the game's first tally.
Hans would add a tally of her own in the 30th minute off a feed from Laura Janowitsch for the 2-0 lead. She would lead all players with four shots on goal.
Northwestern out-shot the Owls 5-2 in the first half and controlled the ball for a majority of the play. They earned three corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, while FAU was unable to force any.
The Owls responded early in the second half, when Lehtinen's corner kick found Comer who headed the ball into the goal and cut the margin in half, 2-1.
FAU would apply pressure throughout the second half, firing six shots to NU's three.
Perhaps the best chance to tie the game came in the 82nd minute by Alicia Tirelli, when she was left all alone on the right side but NU keeper Lauren Johnston made the final of her three saves. FAU keeper Jessica Badders made four stops but suffered her third loss of the season.
Florida Atlantic (1-3-0) will try to snap its two-game losing streak when it travels to Ft. Myers, FL to face Toledo on September 14 at 4 p.m. |
