Owls Practice in Pads for the First Time
April 1, 2006 Boca Raton, FL - The Owls took to the field Saturday morning, on the Tom Oxley Athletic Fields, donning full pads for the first time in 2006 and did so with enthusiasm. Practice began with coverage drills working quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs while linemen worked in separate areas. First contact was made during the "Oklahoma" drill and the sounds from, hits, coaches and players were heard by all in attendance. FAU moved into "inside drills" working to contain the running backs then moved into 7-on-7 on the west field. The linemen made their first contact during the one-on-one pass rush drill. The drill ended with celebration for Peter Pantelakos who held his defensive match-up at bay three-consecutive tries. Practice ended with "team". Collectively, the running backs showed improvement both in finding seams and making catches. Charles Pierre and DiIvory Edgecomb each had strong runs and several catches while fullbacks Aaron Sanchez and B.J. Manley each had a reception. Receivers Chris Bonner and Chad Wilkes were credited with 20 and 30 yard catches, respectively. Under center, Sean Clayton, McKinson Souverain and Rusty Smith continued to battle. Souverain had the 20-yard pass to Bonner while Clayton hurt the defense with a 15-yard scramble.
The Owls will be back on the practice field Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 3:30 p.m. next week, with the spring's first scrimmage scheduled for Saturday, April 8. |
