Track Team Returns to Miami

Interview With Coach Alex Smolka

April 9, 2007

The Florida Atlantic University track team will take part in the Miami Elite Invitational this weekend.

FAU comes into the weekend off a strong performance at the Florida Relays where four school records were set and eight Owls had personal bests. Head Coach Alex Smolka attributes the success to preparation and confidence.

"We have trained so hard to get to this point and we really feel like we're at our best," Smolka said.

The story of the meet was Friederike Feil becoming the second Owl to qualify for the NCAA Regional, which will be held in Gainesville in May.

"It's a great accomplishment for her and the program, she's the first freshman in school history to qualify for the NCAA Regional," said Smolka.

Jordan Zwick also smashed the school record in the 1500 meter by more than 48 seconds and has cut more than a minute off the previous school record since the start of the season. The Elite Invitational will be the Owls' second trip to Miami this season. They participated in the Hurricane Invitational earlier in the outdoor season and recorded 18 top-10 finishes.

The Miami Elite Invitational will be held Saturday April 14, 2007 at the University of Miami's Cobb Stadium.
