BEVERLY, MA - The Endicott College women's tennis team opened its 2007 season with a 9-0 sweep of the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference match up on the South Campus courts Thursday afternoon.
Sophomores Nicole Breting (Woonsocket, RI/Mount St. Charles) and Lori Wardner (Wrentham, MA/King Philip) led the Gulls to victory as the duo took both first and second singles then teamed up to win at first doubles. Breting defeated Nicole Willey (Windham, ME/Windham) 6-1 and 6-0 while Wardner topped Sarah Willey (Windham, ME/Windham) 6-0, 6-3.
Breting and Wardner then won 8-1 against the Willey sisters in first doubles helping EC to the sweep. The Blue and Green also got wins from Kate Fiske (Westerly, RI/Westerly) and Jenna Carme (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield) at third and fourth singles. Freshmen Melissa Delsole clinched the win for the Gulls defeating Sara Reece 6-0, 6-0 in singles.
Fiske and Alyson Boehm (Lowell, MA/Lowell) picked up a win at second doubles, 8-1, while EC also got wins by forfeit at sixth singles and third doubles to take the 9-0 win.
The Gulls improve to 1-0 on the season while the Huskies fall to 0-1. Endicott returns to action on Saturday when the Gulls host Plymouth State University on the South Campus courts at 12:00 pm.
