BEVERLY, MA - Caitlin Flynn (Southold, NY/Mattituck) broke a 1-1 tie with her late first half goal to lead the Endicott College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over rival Gordon College on Tuesday afternoon.
EC opened the scoring just seven minutes into play when Margreta Weber (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) found Paula McGinn (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) who spun off a defender then spilt a pair of defenders with a shot that found the back of the net to give the Gulls a 1-0 lead.
The Fighting Scots tied the score in the 20th minute as Nicole Lembo (Penfield, NY/Penfield) drove a shot through traffic and past EC keeper Amy Meuse (Saugus, MA/Saugus).
Flynn would then put the Blue and Green up for good with a shot that hit the far post and dropped into the net, giving EC a 2-1 advantage.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the second half despite a number of offensive chances from each side. Emily Purinton (Boxborough, MA/Acton-Boxborough) nearly pulled Gordon even again as she kept the Endicott defense busy during the second half. Purinton managed four shots, including three on net but Meuse was up to the task making five saves on seven shots.
The cross town rivals played an evenly matched game with nearly equal possession and a great deal of the game taking place in the neutral area of the field. Endicott's defense played a strong second half anchored by Sarah Miller (Nashua, NH/Bishop Geurtin) and Kelly Cosgrove (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich).
The Fighting Scots fall to 10-4 overall and 7-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the Gulls improve to 8-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Gordon returns to action on Saturday when the Scots head to Roger Williams University to take on the Hawks at 12:30 pm. The Gulls return to the field Thursday when they host Regis College at 4:00 pm on the turf.
