Beverly, Mass. - Endicott College scored 28 points off 24 Emerson turnovers, as the Gulls defeated the Lions, 72-55, on Wednesday evening in a non-conference match-up at the MacDonald Gymnasium in Beverly, Massachusetts.
Endicott began the game on a 10-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from junior guard Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, N.H./Central Catholic) to put the Gulls up big early on. The Blue and Green would extend their lead to as many as 20 points in the opening half, as sophomore Kaylin Burke (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) dialed in from behind the arc to put the Gulls up, 39-19, with just 35-seconds remaining in the opening frame. Endicott would enter the dressing room with a comfortable 18 point halftime lead.
The Gulls kept the pressure on in the second stanza as Sarah Doherty (Somerville, Mass./Arlington Catholic) turned a Maude Okrah (Rutland, Mass./Notre Dame) turnover into two-points, extending the home team's advantage to 24. Moment's later, Endicott grabbed its largest lead of the game as Kaylin Burke struck again from behind the arc, putting the Gulls ahead 56-27 with 11:44 remaining.
Emerson did its best to hang around late in the second half as the Lions built a 9-1 run to cut the deficit down to 20. A 3-ball by Kelly Kwiecinski (Easthampton, Mass./Easthampton) followed by successful jumpers from Lauren Vassallo (Oxford, Conn./Seymour) and a wild deflection from Andrea Kosek (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) gave the visitors hope. However the Endicott lead proved to be too much, and late field goals by Rachel Hewes (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) and Ashley Vitale (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) sealed the win for Endicott.
The Gulls were led by a game-high 22 points from Nicole Duchesne. Ceciley Chisholm (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) notched a double-double as she scored 15 points and grabbed a 10 rebounds in the win. Paris Sanders (Needham, Mass./Minuteman Tech) played strong defense as she had nine rebounds and four blocks for the Gulls.
Emerson was led by Kathy Andrade's (Hull, Mass./Hull) 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Lauren Vassallo also earned a double-double, scoring 12 points and hauling in 11 rebounds in the losing effort.
With the win, Endicott closes out the first semester with an even 4-4 record (0-0 TCCC). The Gulls return to action after the New Year, as they will square-off with Amherst at the Florida Sunshine Shootout Tournament on January 4, 2008.
