Dec. 9, 2006
BEVERLY, MA - Emmanuel College went on a 20-3 run to open the second half, as the Saints cruised to a 72-45 victory over Endicott College on Saturday afternoon in Beverly, MA.
The Saints and Gulls exchanged buckets early, including a nice lay-in by Sara Doherty (Somerville, MA/Arlington Catholic) from Aubrey Drugan (Salem, NH/Bishop Guertin), putting Endicott up 6-5 in the opening minutes. On the very next trip down the court, Endicott's Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, NH/Central Catholic) knocked down a three-pointer, extending the Gulls lead to 9-5.
The Saints would regain the early momentum when Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH/Portsmouth) swiped the ball from the Endicott offense and took it coast-to-coast for the lay-up, putting Emmanuel up 13-11. The Gulls would respond moments later with great ball movement from Doherty and Ceciley Chisholm (Lexington, MA/Lexington) as Carly Haynes (Laconia, NH/Laconia) connected from behind the arc, putting Endicott back on top 23-21.
Emmanuel College held a slight 10-6 scoring edge over the home team in the final minutes of the opening half; however Rachael Bradley (Lynn, MA/St. Mary's of Lynn) sent the Gulls into the locker room on a positive note. With 27 seconds left, the junior forward sliced her way through the Saints defense and nailed a runner in the lane to send Endicott into the half trailing by two, 31-29.
Emmanuel returned to the hardwood with an adjusted game plan, as the Saints applied a tremendous amount of full-court pressure. The visitors, led by LaTeisha Johnson's (Dorchester, MA/Marblehead) game-high 15 points, sparked a 20-3 run to blow the game wide open at 51-32. The Saints held Endicott to under 20% from the field in the second half (5-for-26, 19.2%) and they outscored the Gulls 41-16 over the final 20 minutes to take a 72-45 road victory.
Much of the Saints success came under their own basket, as Emmanuel hauled in 22 offensive rebounds which resulted in 20 second-chance points. The Saints Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds on the afternoon while junior guard Brittany Bushman dropped in 12 points in the winning effort.
Endicott was once again led by the strong play of Nicole Duchesne. The sophomore guard scored a team-high 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss.
The Gulls (5-3) will travel to Emerson College on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. With the win, the Saints enter into a short winter break with a perfect 7-0 record. Next up for Emmanuel is Northwood University in Florida on January 2nd, 2007.
