WENHAM, MA - The Endicott College women's basketball team invaded the Bennett Center at cross-town rival Gordon College on Tuesday night, and made the short trip back to Beverly with an all important Commonwealth Coast Conference victory, 62-46 over the Fighting Scots.
Both teams opened the Tuesday night showdown off to a slow start. Gordon's Amy Dodd (Vestal, NY/Broome C.C.) finally broke the ice as she knocked down a three-pointer a full two minutes into the opening half. The Gulls would rebound and take a slim 8-5 advantage as Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, NH/Central Catholic) converted on a nifty up-and-under and then sank a jumper on the Gulls next possession. Endicott would rattle off 18 of the games next 22 points to end the half, entering the dressing room with a 26-9 road advantage. The Gulls held the Fighting Scots to a minuscule 2-for-32 (6.3%) shooting from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Paris Sanders (Needham, MA/Minuteman Technical) got the visitors off to a solid start in the second half, as the she knocked down a quick 17-footer. The senior forward put two more on the board as she used a strong drop-step in the low post and dropped in an easy lay-in, extending Endicott's lead to 30-9. Gordon found their groove midway through the second half, as the Fighting Scots began capitalizing on their offensive opportunities. The Gulls answered with a nice run, capped off by a slick give-and-go from Ceciley Chisholm (Lexington, MA/Lexington) to Carly Haynes (Laconia, NH/Laconia), back to Chisholm for the hoop and the foul. Following the free-throw, Endicott led 48-21.
Amy Dodd did her best to keep the Fighting Scots in the ballgame, as the senior guard refused to let the home team go quietly. Gordon, led by the Vestal, NY native, put together an impressive 25-7 run to pull within nine at 55-46. Endicott's Keri Buonassisi (Thornwood, NY/Byram Hills) ended the comeback hopes as she collected a Nicole Duchesne rebound and sunk a 6-footer, capping the victory for the visitors.
Gordon College was paced Amy Dodd. The senior guard scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-25 shooting on the night. Endicott was once again led by Nicole Duchesne. The sophomore guard chipped in 18 points, two assists and two steals in the victory.
With the win, Endicott improves to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Gulls return home on Thursday night (Jan. 25) to square off with the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM in Beverly, MA.
