BEVERLY, MA - Gordon overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat Endicott, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in a CCC contest at Endicott Stadium.
Gordon knotted the game at 1-1 a little over five minutes into the second half when junior striker Dave Smith (Salem, NH) scored on a feed from senior midfielder Chris Neffinger (Southampton, MA).
The duo struck again for the game-winner with 33:18 remaining in the second half on Smith's second of the game. The winning goal came on a corner kick by Neffinger.
The win moved the Fighting Scots to 9-3-0 overall and 8-1-0 in the CCC while the Gulls fell to 5-8-0 overall (4-3 CCC).
Endicott freshman striker Kyle Schmutte (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) opened the scoring with his first goal of the year at the 28th minute mark. Schmutte beat Gordon goaltender Peter Hassler (Westford, VT) on a volley from inside the 18-yard line after senior midfielder Josh Lewis (Groveland, MA/Pentucket) sent the freshman in alone with a great through ball.
Hassler made four saves in all, including a great stop on Schmutte in the 21st minute. At the other end sophomore goaltender Cameron Twiss (Reading, MA/Bishop Fenwick) had six saves. Twiss made a diving stopp to rob sophomore defender Joshua Mason (Westerly, RI) with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half.
The Gulls had a chance to tie the game with 10:30 remaining in regulation on a Schmutte header but Hassler was equal to the challenge, diving to his right to make the save.
Endicott hosts Nichols on Homecoming Day at Endicott on Saturday (4:00 pm) while Gordon travels to Anna Maria Saturday (TBA).
