December 11, 2006 - The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team cruised to a 72-45 win over Endicott College on Saturday afternoon. The Saints were paced by senior forward LaTeisha Johnson's (Dorchester, MA) 15 points and 8 rebounds. Johnson shot 7 for 12 from the floor in just 25 minutes of action. Junior guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) knocked in 12 points, while junior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) and freshman forward Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA) chipped in with 9 points apiece. Davis also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds in the win. The Saints out-rebounded the Gulls, 49-33 and scored 36 points in the paint. Emmanuel remains unbeaten at 7-0. The Saints will travel to Palm Beach, Florida for two games over the winter break. Emmanuel will play both Northwood University and Johnson & Wales University (FL).
The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed in the Harvard Invitational on Saturday. Team captains Rob Allen (Plymouth, MA) and Brett Adell (Greene, ME) led the Saints with record-breaking performances. Allen set a new school record in the 60m (7.39) and broke his own record in the 400m (52.68). Adell broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 7 inches and improved on his personal best by 4' 5". Several other team members improved on their personal bests as well. Sophomore Philip Meagher (Amherst, MA) achieved his best in the shot put and sophomore Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) improved her mile time. Junior Mike Thurnauer (Reading, MA) ran his best ever in the 400m and 200m races, while sophomore Bryce McNamee (Grafton, MA) improved in his 200m time. Freshmen Mark Proto (West Haven, CT) and Patrick Welton (Derby, CT) ran their personal bests in the 500m and 200m races. Freshman Rustam Allakhverdiyev (Kazakhstan) improved on his 800m time and freshman Megan Reichel (Mashpee, MA) improved on her collegiate best in the high jump by 3 inches. The Men's Basketball Team fell to Western New England College on Saturday. The disappointing loss featured 5 ties and 8 lead changes, before the Saints were defeated, 61-57. Emmanuel held a 5-point lead with 9 minutes remaining. WNEC took the lead on a deep three-pointer at the 6-minute mark. The Saints then came within two points twice down the stretch at 55-53 and 59-57, but Golden Bear free throws sealed the deal for WNEC. Emmanuel was led by sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton's (Oak Park, MI) 20 points and 6 rebounds. Junior forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) notched his 2nd double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Junior forward Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) and sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) chipped in with 9 points apiece. Emmanuel has struggled in the 1st semester and has yet to pick up a win. The Saints will look for their 1st W when they travel to Florida over the break to play in the Northwood University Tournament.
December 7, 2006 - The Emmanuel Men's Basketball Team was in control for much of Thursday night's game against visiting Wesleyan University. The Saints held the lead for the first 28 of the 40 minutes played. But with 12 minutes remaining in the contest, the tides turned on Emmanuel. The Cardinals made a 2nd-half run which included hitting 4 of 9 three-point attempts and held on for a 69-63 victory. Foul trouble plagued the Saints for much of the 2nd half. Poor defense sent the Cardinals to the line 38 times. Wesleyan shot just 55% (21-38) from the stripe and helped the Saints stay within reach. Emmanuel received a double-double from junior forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA). Lindsey hit for 15 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) also netted 15 points, to go along with his 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Sophomore swingman Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) chipped in with 9 points and 11 boards, while freshman point guard Mike Jackson (New York, NY) returned to action by dishing out a game-high 6 assists. The 0-5 Saints will be looking for their first win of the season on Saturday when they travel to Springfield to take on the Golden Bears of Western New England College in a 3:30 pm start.
December 4, 2006 - The Women's Basketball Team picked up its 5th win of the season on Saturday afternoon in Middletown, CT. Emmanuel had defeated Wesleyan by 7 points back on November 19th, in the Emmanuel College Tip-Off Tournament Championship game. The Saints pulled through again on Saturday when they faced the Cardinals on the road. Emmanuel edged Wesleyan, 72-70, in a battle featuring five lead changes. Junior point guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) led the way for the Saints with 20 points on 7 for 12 shooting. Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) returned from an injury to pump in 13 points and dish out 5 assists. Senior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while junior guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) chipped in with 12 points. The Saints led by 15 points with 4:21 remaining, but the Cardinals were able to cut the deficit to 5 points with just 12 seconds to go. Wesleyan continued to fight, connecting on a 3-pointer with 7 seconds remaining, but the Saints outlasted the Cardinals and held on for a 72-70 victory. Emmanuel is now 5-0 on the season. The Saints will host MIT on Tuesday night (12/5) at 7:00 pm.
The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams opened up their seasons at the Northeastern University Husky Carnival on Saturday. Junior Rob Allen (Plymouth, MA) returned from last year's season ending injury with two strong performances. Allen broke the school record in both the 55m (6.90) and the 400m (52.78) races. Senior Carlos Escobar (Cambridge, MA) broke the Emmanuel record in the 3000m (9:38.12). Senior Brett Adell (Greene, ME) also returned to form after being unable to throw last season due to shoulder surgery. Adell just missed breaking the school record in the shotput with a toss of 32 feet, 2 inches. Junior Samantha Scola (Medford, MA) ran her personal best in the 500m with a time of 1:39.91. The Men's Basketball Team suffered its 4th loss of the season on Saturday, falling to Suffolk University in the conference opener for both teams. The Saints trailed by 14 with 5:22 remaining, but battled back, going on a 9-0 run and cutting the Rams' lead to 4 with less than one minute remaining. The Rams connected on their free throws down the stretch and held on for an 85-78 win. The Saints' received a solid effort from sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI). Williams-Hinton netted 21 points on 8 of 17 shooting. Junior forward Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) had his first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Junior guard Andre Barbosa (Taunton, MA) and sophomore forward Andres Bustamante (Amherst, MA) provided a spark off the bench, combining for 22 points, hitting 10 of 16 shots from the floor. Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, MA) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Saints. The Saints will be looking for their first win of the season on Thursday night (12/7), when they host the Cardinals of Wesleyan University at 7:00 pm.
