Saints Head to NECVA Tourney

March 29, 2004 - The Men's Volleyball Team defeated Johnson & Wales University on Saturday in their last regular season match. The Saints lost the first game, 26-30, but came back to take the next three, 30-19, 31-29, & 30-24. Sophomore Captain Stephen Yates led Emmanuel with 17 kills & 11 digs, while junior Mike Mazur and freshman John Bluhm combined for 30 kills in the match. Sophomore setter Patrick Bemis added 49 assists and 10 digs in the win. The Saints finished the regular season with an overall record of 15-9 and a NECVA-New England record of 13-5. Emmanuel clinched 3rd place in the Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association - New England Division, giving the program it's first bid into the post-season NECVA Tournament. The Saints will travel to Buffalo, NY on Friday (4/2) for the opening round of the tournament. The winner of the NECVA Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the Molten National Championship.

Congratulations to Mike Mazur for being named NECVA-New England Player of the Week and to John Bluhm for being named NECVA conference and New England Division Rookie of the Week. Both student-athletes are receiving this honor for the 2nd time this season.

The Softball Team split in a double-header with Johnson & Wales on Saturday. The Saints lost the first game 2-1 and came back to win the second game, 8-7. Both games went into extra innings. Senior 1st baseman Katie Foley led the Saints' offense with 5 hits and 3 RBIs. She also added 18 put-outs. Freshman catcher Christine Sampson was strong at the plate with 5 hits in 9 at bats, including a triple and 2 RBIs. Senior short-stop Tara Stanford chipped in with 3 hits on offense and 9 assists on defense. With the 2nd game tied at 7 in the 10th inning, sophomore Katherine Palmer-Thompson hit an RBI single scoring Stanford for the game-winning run. Alexis Lawrence pitched all 19 innings in the 2 games, facing 74 batters and striking out 8. The Saints are now 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC. The team plays again today (3/29) at Salem State at 3:30 pm. Emmanuel then travels to Western New England College on Tuesday (3/30) for a conference double-header beginning at 2pm. The Saints play twice at home this weekend, facing Norwich on Saturday (4/3) at 2pm and Southern Vermont on Sunday (4/4) at 10:00 am. All home softball games are played at Roberto Clemente Field on Park Drive at the Fens.

The Men's and Women's Track & Field Team opened up the outdoor season on Saturday, competing in the Northeastern University Snowflake Classic. The meet included competition from eight NCAA Division I, four Division II, and seven Division III schools. The men's team set several new school records. Sophomore Jairus Oxendine led the way with a 2nd place finish in the triple jump, leaping of 44'1.5". Oxendine also placed 5th in the high jump (6'0"). Freshman Christian Gomez established new school records in the shot-put (29'10") and discus (54'5"). Freshman Carlos Escobar continued his assault on the distance records with his performances in the 800m (2:06.83) and 1500m (4:36.34). Freshman Adam Church established a new record in the javelin (89'10"), while juniors Serghino Rene and Derrick Trotman had fine opening performances in the 400m and 200m.

Freshman Nyrie Emslie led the way for the women's team with new records in the 1500m (5:46.26) and 800m (2:53.09). Freshman Jessica Sehovich established a new record in the long jump (14'3.25") and sophomore Laura Mason just missed her own record in the discus. After missing the outdoor season last year and most of the indoor season this year with an injury, captain Betsy Suda was close to her own record in the 5000m. Freshman Holly Rosa joined Suda in the 5000m and ran her personal best. Several Emmanuel athletes set new personal records: Elise Grant (100m), Meaghan Kenny and Tiare Baird in the shot-put and discus, Maggie Brice (800m), Dorothy Shanahan (800m), and Jackie Hogan (100m hurdles). Ashley Nigro (100m / SP), Susan Aguiar (1500m / SP), and Rebecca Cowen (800m) also had fine performances. The Track & Field Team travels to Rhode Island next weekend to compete in the Rhode Island College Invitational.

Saints Spike Wentworth

March 22, 2004 - The Men's Volleyball Team rolled past Wentworth on Saturday, 3 games to 1. Emmanuel lost the 1st game, 27-30, then came back to take the next three, 30-22, 30-27, and 30-24. The Saints were led by junior captain Mike Mazur (17 kills, 7 blocks, & 5 digs) and sophomore captain Stephen Yates (13 kills & 11digs). Freshman John Bluhm added 15 kills & 11 digs, while sophomore Patrick Bemis chipped in with 45 assists & 9 digs. The Saints improved their record to 13-8 overall and 11-4 in NECVA-New England. Tonight (3/22), Emmanuel will host Lasell College at 8:00 pm. The Saints play again at home this Thursday (3/25) vs. Endicott at 8pm and Saturday (3/27) vs. Johnson & Wales at 1:00 pm.

The Softball Team returned from spring break in Fort Myers, Florida with a 2-5 record. The Emmanuel victories included a 4-0 shut-out over nationally ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a 4-3 win over DeSales University. Freshman catcher Christine Sampson racked up 14 hits and 1 RBI on the trip. She currently leads the Saints with an amazing .824 batting average. Junior outfielder Katey Wentworth and senior 1st baseman Katie Foley tallied 6 hits and 3 RBIs apiece. Sophomore pitcher Alexis Lawrence pitched all of the 46 innings played in Florida, striking out 21 batters. Emmanuel's first home game, scheduled for this Saturday (3/27) vs. Johnson & Wales University, will now be played in East Providence, RI due to the current field condition at the Fens. Saints Fall Short at Salve

March 9, 2004 - After winning their 4th straight GNAC Championship and receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Women's Basketball Team was defeated by Salve Regina University in the 1st round of the NCAAs. Freshman forward LaTeisha Johnson recorded her 4th double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Freshman guard Nicole Cochrane hit for 10 points, including three 3-pointers, while junior forward Paulette Johnson chipped in with 6 points and 6 rebounds. Senior guard Chrissy Pagano hit a deep 3-pointer with just seconds remaining to pull the Saints within three, 61-58. Emmanuel nearly sent the game into overtime, but junior guard Katey Wentworth's 3-pointer at the buzzer went in and out as time expired.

The Women's Basketball Team's success this season included the program's 9th GNAC Tournament Championship and 9th NCAA Tournament appearance. Emmanuel has now gone undefeated in the GNAC for the past 4 seasons, winning 60 straight conference games. The Saints have accumulated an incredible 4-year record of 105 wins and only 16 losses. This is easily one of the best 4-year records in Division III. This season, Head Coach Andy Yosinoff was voted Co-Coach of the Year by his peers in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Saints look forward to the opening of the new Jean Yawkey Student Center next fall.

The Men's Volleyball Team nearly knocked off nationally ranked Roger Williams University on Thursday night. The Saints lost the first two games, 20-30 and 17-30, but were able to rally back and take the third and fourth games, 31-29 and 30-28. However, Roger Williams regained control and took the fifth game, 15-12. Emmanuel was led by junior Mike Mazur (20 kills, 6 blocks, & 5 digs), sophomore Steven Yates (15 digs & 12 digs), freshman John Bluhm (15 kills), and sophomore Patrick Bemis (61 assists & 10 digs). Emmanuel is now 9-3 in the NECVA-New England and 11-7 overall. The Saints play again at home next Tuesday (3/16) and Wednesday (3/17), when they square off with conference foes Elms College and Rivier College. Both matches start at 8:00 pm.



Saints to Take on Salve Regina in NCAAs

March 1, 2004 - The Women's Basketball Team (24-4) will travel to Newport, Rhode Island on Wednesday (3/3) to take on Salve Regina University (24-4) in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament. The game will tip off at 7:00 pm. A bus for fans will leave from outside the Administration Building at 4:45 pm. Ticket prices are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.

The winner of Wednesday night's game will travel to Brunswick, ME to take on undefeated Bowdoin College (26-0) in the 2nd round of the tournament on Saturday (3/6). To view the full NCAA Division III Tournament bracket, go to ncaasports.com.
