Emmanuel Will Host Salem State in 1st Round NCAA Regional

February 28, 2005 - The Women's Basketball Team will host Salem State College on Wednesday night (3/2) at 7:00 pm in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. After winning the GNAC Championship on Saturday, the Saints (26-2) will face the Vikings (21-6), champions of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference. The last time these two teams met (January 20th), the Vikings prevailed with a 59-57 victory over the Saints. The winner of Wednesday's game will travel to Lewiston, Maine to take on Bates College on Saturday (3/5) in the 2nd round of the tournament.



Emmanuel Streaks Past Norwich, 78-65; Saints Win 5th Straight GNAC Championship

February 26, 2005 - The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team won their 5th straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, defeating Norwich University, 78-65. The Saints (26-2) have gone undefeated in the GNAC since 2000, winning 75 straight conference games. Emmanuel was led by freshman point guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY). Paez, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, netted 22 points to go along with 5 steals and 4 assists in 39 minutes. Junior forward Alyssa McCoy (Washington, DC) hit for 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, while senior forward Paulette Johnson (Providence, RI) pumped in 12 points and pulled down 14 boards. Sophomore forward LaTeisha Johnson (Boston, MA) added 8 points and 10 rebounds in the attack. LaTeisha Johnson and McCoy were named to the All-Tournament Team for Emmanuel.

Junior point guard Allison Flynn (Salem, MA) led the Cadets (24-4) with 18 points and 4 assists in 39 minutes. Senior forwards Kim Sweeney (Fair Haven, VT) and Miranda Perras (Mooers, NY) combined for 27 points and 15 rebounds. Sweeney, who scored her 1,000th career point in the game, and Flynn were named to the All-Tournament Team for Norwich.

With this win, Emmanuel receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Saints will play in the first round of the national tournament on Wednesday, March 2nd.



Emmanuel Downs Suffolk 69-57; Saints Advance to GNAC Championship

February 25, 2005 - The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team knocked off 5th-seeded Suffolk University, 69-57, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Semifinals. Sophomore Forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) led the Saints (25-2) with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Forward Alyssa McCoy (Washington, DC) netted 16 points and grabbed 7 boards, while Senior Forward Paulette Johnson (Providence, RI) hit for 13 points and pulled down 7 rebounds in the win. Emmanuel scored 36 of the team's 69 points in the paint and converted 23 points off of Suffolk's 25 turnovers. Senior Forward Allison Fox (Easton, MA) was the high-scorer for the Rams with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. Emmanuel will now advance to the GNAC Championship. The Saints will face the 3rd-seeded Cadets of Norwich University on Saturday (2/26) at 4:00 pm in the Yawkey Center. The Saints will be looking for their 5th straight GNAC Championship.



Record-Breaking Season Ends in Semifinals; Women's Hoop Set to Host Tourney

February 24, 2005 - The Men's Basketball Team fell to Emerson College, 77-72, on Thursday night in the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament. This was Emmanuel's first-ever semifinal appearance. The Saints led by 3 at the break (35-32) and extended their lead to 9 with just six minutes to play. The Lions' pressure defense forced turnovers down the stretch and the Saints could not capitalize on the offensive end. Senior guard Bobby Brown led four Saints in double-figures. Brown netted 15 points, including 5 three-pointers. Freshman center Levi Smith pumped in 12 points, while senior forward Albert Hayle knocked in 11 more. Freshman forward Brian Lindsey chipped in with 10 points in the game. Emerson's Steve Georgoulis and Will Dawkins led the Lions with 22 points apiece. The Saints ended their season with a program-record 17 wins and 10 losses. Emerson will advance to the GNAC Championship and will take on Norwich University in Northfield, VT on Saturday.

The Women's Basketball Team will square off with visiting Suffolk University on Friday night at 5:30 pm in the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium. The Saints received the #1 seed in the GNAC tournament and defeated 8th-seeded Pine Manor College, 82-54, on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals. Emmanuel (24-2) will now face 5th-seeded Suffolk University in the tournament semifinals. The winner of this game will play for the GNAC championship on Saturday at 4:00 pm vs. the winner of the other semifinal game, featuring (#2) Western New England College and (#3) Norwich University.

The six seniors on the Men's and Women's Cross Country and Indoor Track & Field Teams will be honored at half-time of the Emmanuel/Suffolk women's basketball game on Friday night. The six seniors are: Serghino Rene, Scott Holmes, Eliza Kane, Nimit Nathwani, Elise Grant and Justin Clements.

The Men's Volleyball Team won their 4th straight match on Thursday night, defeating Mount Ida College. The Saints defeated the Mustangs in 3 games (30-26, 30-18, and 30-21). Emmanuel is now 5-8 overall and 4-6 in NECVA-New England. The Saints play again on Tuesday (3/1) at Newbury College at 7:00 pm. This is the Saints' last match before spring break.



Men's Hoop Wins 1st Tourney Game

February 22, 2005 - The Men's Basketball Team knocked off 6th-seeded Rivier College in the GNAC quarterfinals on Tuesday night, winning their first-ever conference tournament game. Senior point guard Jerry Etienne led five Emmanuel players in double figures to lead the Saints to a 96-85 victory. Etienne netted 21 points on 5 for 7 shooting (including 4 three-pointers), dished out 5 assists, and grabbed 3 rebounds. Senior guard Keven James pumped in 14 points and pulled down 6 boards, while freshman forward Brian Lindsey hit for 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Emmanuel post players Albert Hayle and Levi Smith added 10 points and 8 rebounds apiece in the win.

The 3rd-seeded Saints (17-9) will now advance to the GNAC semifinals on Thursday night (2/24). Emmanuel will take on the 2nd-seeded Lions of Emerson College (16-9) at 7:00 pm. This game will be played at Pine Manor College. A bus for fans will leave on Thursday at 6:30 pm from outside the Administration Building. Seating is on a first come, first serve basis.



Brown, Etienne Power Saints Past Southern Vermont; Emmanuel to Host 1st Round Tourney Game

February 21, 2005 - The Men's Basketball Team picked up their 16th win of the season on Sunday, when the Saints defeated Southern Vermont College, 96-77. Senior guard Bobby Brown led all scorers with 22 points. Senior point guard Jerry Etienne recorded his 1st career double-double. Etienne netted 15 points (including 4 of 6 three-point attempts), dished out a program-record 10 assists, and added 6 steals in the game. Senior forward Albert Hayle pumped in 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while freshman forward Brian Lindsey hit for 11 points in the win. The Saints ended the regular season with an overall record of 16-9 and a GNAC record of 13-5. With this win over Southern Vermont, the Saints finished conference play in a 3-way tie for second place in the GNAC (with Emerson College & Western New England College). Based upon head-to-head competition, the conference tie-breaker requirements provide Emmanuel with the 3rd seed in the upcoming Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament. Emmanuel will host the program's 1st-ever GNAC tournament game on Tuesday night (2/22) at 7:00 pm. The Saints will take on the 6th-seeded Raiders of Rivier College in the GNAC Quarterfinals. The winner of this game will advance to the conference semi-finals on Thursday night, vs. the winner of the (#2) Emerson / (#7) Suffolk game.

The Women's Basketball Team finished up the regular season with an undefeated record in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference for the 5th straight season. The Saints set a national Division III women's basketball record with their regular season conference game win streak of 65 games. This winning streak dates back to February of 2000. Emmanuel's overall record of 23-2 has given the Saints a national ranking of 13th in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll and a ranking of 16th in the D3hoops.com national poll. The Saints received the top seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament and will host the 8th-seeded Gators of Pine Manor College on Wednesday (2/23) at 7:00 pm. The winner of this game will advance to the conference semi-finals on Friday night, vs. the winner of the (#4) Simmons / (#5) Suffolk game.

The Men's Volleyball Team won 2-straight conference games last week. The Saints defeated Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday night, 3-2. Sophomore John Bluhm led the attack, hitting .471 with 20 kills in 34 attempts. Junior Stephen Yates had 19 kills, 6 digs, and 2 blocks, while senior Mike Mazur added 14 kills, 12 digs, and 5 blocks. Senior Dan McNeil chipped in with 9 kills, 4 digs, and 2 blocks. Setter Brian Forsman dished out a team-high 56 assists in the match. Emmanuel extended the winning into Friday, when the Saints pounded Mount Ida College in 3 games. Yates led the way with 16 kills in 23 attempts. Seniors Warren Bowman and Mazur combined for 18 kills, while Forsman added 26 assists. The Saints are now 3-8 overall and 2-6 in NECVA New England. Emmanuel will travel to Lasell College on Monday night (2/21) for a 7:00 pm start.

The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Team had several representatives compete in the New England Division III Championships. Junior Laura Mason and freshman Shannon McHenry made history by being the first Emmanuel track & field athletes to compete as individuals in the indoor championships. Mason competed in the weight throw, but was unable to improve on her season best. McHenry competed in the high jump, but was also unable to improve on her record-breaking season. Both athletes competed at Smith College on Saturday.

The men's 4 x 400 meter relay team competed at Tufts University on Saturday. The relay team consisted of Serghino Rene, Michael Thurnauer, Matt Hickey, and Rob Allen. The Saints ran their second fastest time of the year, but did not place in the meet. The members of the track team will take a few weeks off before they resume training for the outdoor season. With increased experience, the outdoor team has high hopes of having more individual athletes qualify for the outdoor New England Championships this spring.



Mason, McHenry Qualify for D3 New Englands

February 14, 2005 - The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Team competed in its last regular season meet this Saturday, the Tufts University Stampede. Junior Laura Mason and freshman Shannon McHenry qualified for the Division III New England Championships next Saturday (2/19) at Smith College. Mason broke her own school record in the weight throw (41'10'') and McHenry improved on her record in the high jump (5'1/4"). Junior Jenna Boutilier accomplished her personal best and broke the school record in the 800m. Freshman Michael Thurnauer broke the school record in the triple jump. He also ran his personal best in the 55 meter hurdles. Freshman Kristen Impastato ran her personal best in the 800m, while Sophomores Holly Rosa and Dorothy Shanahan ran their personal bests in the 1000m. The men's 4x400 meter relay team will also compete in the DIII New England Championships on Saturday (2/19). The men's meet will take place at Tufts University. The team includes: Serghino Rene, Carlos Escobar, Michael Thurnauer and Rob Allen. Freshman Matt Hickey will accompany the team as the alternate. Click here for complete results.

The Men's Basketball Team picked up its 13th win of the season on Saturday when they outlasted Suffolk University, 74-70. Freshman center Levi Smith led the way for Emmanuel with 22 points and 6 boards. Albert Hayle added 18 points and 6 rebounds, while Keven James chipped in with 14 points in the win. The Saints are now 13-8 overall and 11-4 in the GNAC. Emmanuel plays again at home on Tuesday night (2/15) against Mount Ida College at 7:00 pm. The six seniors on the Men's Basketball Team will be honored prior to the start of this game.

The Women's Basketball Team extended its win streak to 9 games, defeating Suffolk University on Saturday, 69-53. Sophomore forward LaTeisha Johnson recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman point guard Jade Paez hit for 15 points and dished out 4 assists. The Saints are now 21-2 overall and 10-0 in the GNAC. With this win, Emmanuel clinched the #1 seed for the GNAC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday (2/23). The Saints' final regular season home game is this Thursday night (2/17) vs. Saint Joseph College at 7:00 pm.

The Men's Volleyball Team was defeated by Wentworth on Thursday in 5 games. The game scores were: 30-18, 23-30, 30-19, 24-30, and 14-16. Senior Mike Mazur led the Saints with 22 kills and 3 blocks. Junior Stephen Yates added 16 kills and 8 digs, while sophomore John Bluhm notched 11 kills and 4 digs. Junior setter Pat Bemis had a team-high 51 assists in the match. The Saints are now 1-8 overall and 0-6 NECVA. Emmanuel plays again at home on Wednesday night (2/16) vs. Johnson & Wales University at 8:00 pm.



Hayle Scores 1,000th as Saints Edge JWU

February 8, 2005 - Senior forward Albert Hayle pumped in 18 points, including the 1,000th of his collegiate career, and led the Men's Basketball Team to a 78-72 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday night. Hayle is just the 2nd player in program history to score 1,000 points. Freshman center Levi Smith posted a double-double with 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Senior forward Michael Hale hit for 13 points, while freshman forward Brian Lindsey added 11 points and 9 rebounds in the win. The Saints improved their record to 12-8 overall and 10-4 in the GNAC. Emmanuel plays again at home on Thursday night (2/10) vs. Southern Vermont College at 7:00 pm.

The Women's Basketball Team stormed Simmons College on Tuesday night, 75-48. Freshman guard Brittany Bushman led the way with 15 points and 4 steals. Forwards Paulette Johnson and LaTeisha Johnson combined for 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Senior guard Katey Wentworth chipped in with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists in the win. With this win, the Saints picked up their 20th of the season. Emmanuel is now 20-2 overall and 9-0 in the GNAC. The Saints play again at home on Saturday (2/12) vs. Suffolk University at 1:00 pm.



Women's Hoop Holds OFf WNEC

February 8, 2005 - The Women's Basketball Team rolled past the visiting Western New England College Golden Bears on Saturday, 73-44. Both teams were undefeated in conference play heading into this game. Freshman point guard Jade Paez netted 16 points on 6 for 12 shooting to lead the Saints. Junior forward Alyssa McCoy added 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals in the win. The Saints improved their record to 19-2 overall and 8-0 in the GNAC. Emmanuel is currently ranked 20th in the D3hoops.com national poll. The Saints play again on Tuesday night (2/8) at Simmons College at 7:00 pm.

After upsetting Emerson College on Monday night and pounding visiting Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday night, the Men's Baskeball Team was defeated by Western New England College, 91-72 on Saturday. The Saints fell to 11-8 overall and 9-4 in the GNAC, despite a 15-point effort from senior guard Bobby Brown. Senior captains Albert Hayle and Keven James added 12 points apiece in the loss. Hayle's 12 points on Saturday gives him a total of 999 points in his collegiate career. The Saints play again at home on Tuesday night (2/8) vs. Johnson & Wales University at 7:30 pm.

The Men's Volleyball Team struggled on Monday night, losing to Endicott College in 3 games. The Saints are currently 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association - New England Division. Junior outside hitter Stephen Yates leads the team in kills with 80 (3.33 per game) and digs with 77 (3.21 per game). Senior middle hitter Mike Mazur has accumulated 73 kills and averages just under 4 kills per game. Mazur also leads the Saints in hitting percentage with .412 and blocking with 1.11 per game. Junior setter Pat Bemis has dished out 198 assists so far this season and averages 9.0 per game. The Saints will be looking for their first NECVA win on Thursday night (2/10) when they take on Wentworth Institute of Technology (@ WIT) at 7:00 pm.

The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Team had an excellent showing at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday. Competing in a more relaxed atmosphere helped several team members as they set new school records in their respective events. Several athletes tried new events and came away with tremendous results. Sophomore Carlos Escobar turned in a strong performance in the 1000m with his record-setting 3rd place finish. Senior Laura Mason improved once again in the shot put, taking home a 2nd place finish and setting a new school record. Mason also placed 2nd in the weight throw. Freshman Matt Hickey and senior Serghino Rene finished 5th and 6th respectively in the 600m. Hickey's time was good enough to break the school record. Sophomore Chris Nezivar set the school record in the weight throw on his 2nd attempt, while sophomore Christian Gomez followed up with a new record in the shot put. Numerous athletes achieved their personal bests on Saturday and a few just missed breaking school records in their events. Also at the Coast Guard meet, former Emmanuel track star Betsy Suda finished 1st in the 3000m run with an excellent showing just several weeks after running in the Bermuda Marathon.
