Saints Tame Lions

January 31, 2006 - The Men's Basketball Team overcame a seven-point deficit in the 2nd half to overtake Emerson College on Monday night, 59-56. The lead changed four times and the score was tied eight times throughout the night, as the Saints (10-1 GNAC) tried to hold off the 2nd place Lions (7-4 GNAC). With Emmanuel leading by one point with 24 seconds remaining, sophomore point guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Detroit, MI) hit a jumper in the lane to seal the win. Freshman forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) recorded a double-double in the win. He led all Emmanuel scorers with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Spellman was also named the GNAC Rookie of the Week for the 3rd time this season. Junior guard Toliver Thomas (New Orleans, LA) netted 14 points, pulled down 9 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists, while sophomore forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) pumped in 11 points and grabbed 9 boards. The Saints out-rebounded the Lions, 53-36. Emmanuel improved its record to 12-6 overall and 10-1 in the GNAC. The Saints are now solidly in first place in the conference with a two-game lead. The team will travel to Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT on Wednesday night (2/1) to take on the Falcons in a 7:00 pm start.

The Women's Basketball Team cruised to a 66-48 win over Emerson on Monday night. Sophomore guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) led all scorers with 12 points and 4 assists. The Saints forced 27 Lion turnovers, including 8 steals by sophomore point guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY). Seniors Alyssa McCoy (Washington, D.C.) and Evita Esteves (North Charleston, SC) hit for 9 points apiece in the win. Emmanuel also got a big game from both sophomore forward Sara Long (Oakland, NJ) and freshman guard Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, NH), who came off the bench to combine for 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. The Saints are now 14-5 overall and remain undefeated at 6-0 in the GNAC. Alyssa McCoy was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll again this week in recognition of her performances in last week's games. Emmanuel will host the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday night (2/1) at 7:00 pm.

The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed in the University of Southern Maine Invitational Meet on Saturday. Both the men's and women's team turned in some fine performances. Freshman Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA) and sophomore T.J. Griffis (Marshfield, MA) broke the Emmanuel record in the mile. The men's 4 x 800m team consisting of Carlos Escobar, Matt Hickey, Patrick Chviruk, and T.J. Griffis lowered the school record they had set two weeks ago (8:45.99). The women's 4 x 800m record was also broken (12:01.67) by the team of Dorothy Shanahan, Christine Gaspar, Caitlin Minville, and Kristen Impastato. Numerous athletes achieved their personal bests. Junior Brett Adell (Greene, ME) and sophomore Ryan Bringhurst (Walpole, MA) improved their times in the 55m dash. Sophomore Keelyn Blanchfield (E. Thetford, VT) and senior Ashley Nigro (Milford, MA) ran a strong 400m on the way to their personal best. Sophomore Caitlin Minville (Marian, MA), junior Holly Rosa (Greenacres, FL), and senior Rebecca Cowen (Uncasville, CT) ran their fastest 600m ever. Junior Dorothy Shanahan (Accord, NY) improved her time in the 800m, while freshman Julie Adams (Monson, MA) achieved her personal best in the 200m. Both teams look to improve even more on Saturday (2/4) when they compete in the 3rd Tufts Invitational.

The Men's Volleyball Team picked up its first win of the season last Wednesday night vs. Lasell College. The Saints defeated the Lasers in 5 games (31-29, 30-24, 24-30, 25-30, 15-10). Senior outside hitter Stephen Yates (New Bedford, MA) led Emmanuel with 18 kills and 15 digs. Junior outside hitter John Bluhm (Ventura, CA) slammed down 17 kills, while senior setter Pat Bemis (Pittsburgh, PA) recorded 13 kills and dished out 32 assists. Hitters Peter Whaley (Hebron, ME) and Sophanna Lout (Allston, MA) combined for 13 kills and freshman libero Gregg MacDonald (Wilbraham, MA) made 14 digs in the match. The Saints are now 1-4 on the season. They will travel to Elms College in Chicopee, MA on Wednesday night (2/1) for a 7:00 pm start.



Spellman Shoots Saints Past Suffolk

January 24, 2006 - The Emmanuel College Men's Basketball Team extended its conference win streak to five games, defeating Suffolk University 83-68. Freshman sensation Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) led the Saints with 27 points, on 10 for 18 shooting. Spellman was perfect from the free throw line (4-4) and hit 3 three-pointers. He also grabbed 6 rebounds and made 2 steals in the game. Sophomore center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) pumped in 15 points and pulled down 7 rebounds, while junior guard Toliver Thomas (New Orleans, LA) added 14 points and dished out 7 assists. Sophomore forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) chipped in with 13 points and grabbed 9 boards. The Saints' tough defense forced 24 Suffolk turnovers. Emmanuel improved its record to 10-6 overall and 8-1 in the GNAC, while the Rams fell to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in the GNAC. Mack Spellman received GNAC Rookie of the Week honors for the 2nd time this season, while Levi Smith was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll. Emmanuel will host the Raiders of Rivier College at 3:00 pm on Saturday (1/28) in the 2nd game of a triple-header.

The Women's Basketball Team cruised to an 80-68 win over Pine Manor College on Tuesday night. Sophomore guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) netted 26 points, including 6 three-pointers. Senior guard Molly Forbes (North Berwick, ME) had a solid night with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists. Senior guard Evita Esteves (North Charleston, SC) connected on 6 of 9 attempts from the floor, scoring 17 points in the win. Senior forward Alyssa McCoy (Washington, D.C.) pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds for the Saints. McCoy was also named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll following her performances during last week's games. The Saints are now 11-5 on the season and 4-0 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will play at Babson College on Thursday night (1/26) at 7:00 pm.

The Men's Volleyball Team will be looking to pick up its first win of the season on Wednesday night (1/25). The Saints will host Lasell College at 8:00 pm in the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium.



Saints Double Up on Norwich

January 23, 2006 - The Men's and Women's Basketball Teams defeated Norwich University on Saturday afternoon in arguably the most exciting double-header in Emmanuel history. The Men's Basketball Team opened up the action with a 65-62 win in the 1:00 game. The Saints had fallen to the Cadets just one week earlier in an overtime thriller in Northfield, VT. Norwich entered the game with a record of 12-2. The Cadets were also undefeated, not only in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (8-0), but also in New England. Saturday's battle featured 8 lead changes and 4 ties. Freshman forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) led all scorers with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) chipped in with 14 points and 4 rebounds, while junior guard Toliver Thomas (New Orleans, LA) netted 12 points and dished out 5 assists. The Saints out-rebounded the Cadets, 48-37, behind sophomore forward Brian Lindsey's (New Orleans, LA) 11 boards.

Emmanuel led 39-32 at the break and was outscored by Norwich 30-26 in the second half. The Saints led by just two points with 18 seconds remaining in the game when sophomore guard Sean Williams (Bronx, NY) hit a big-time jumper from the wing. Emmanuel's Spellman rebounded a missed 3-point attempt by Norwich and was fouled. Spellman made both free-throw attempts to give Emmanuel a six-point advantage. A Norwich 3-pointer at the buzzer cut Emmanuel's lead to three, but time ran out on the Cadets. The Saints improved their record to 9-6 overall and 7-1 in the GNAC. Emmanuel is now tied for first place in the conference with Norwich. The Saints will host Suffolk University on Tuesday night (1/24) at 7:00 pm.

The Women's Basketball Team edged Norwich in the 3:00 pm contest. This back and forth thriller included 12 lead changes and 9 ties before Emmanuel took a 51-47 win. The Saints trailed by two points with just 22 seconds remaining when senior forward Alyssa McCoy (Washington, DC) was fouled and hit both free-throw attempts, tying the game at 47. A steal by Emmanuel guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) and a runner in the lane by senior forward Molly Forbes (North Berwick, ME) gave the Saints a two point advantage, 49-47. After a player control foul called on the Cadets and a technical foul called on the Norwich bench, Bushman hit both free throw attempts and sealed the win for Emmanuel.

McCoy recorded a double-double for Emmanuel with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Bushman netted 14 points and made 3 steals, while forwards LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) and Maura Mooney (Essex, VT) each scored 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Saints. Emmanuel played without starting point guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY), who was sidelined with an injury. The Saints improved their record to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC. Emmanuel extended its record-setting regular season conference win streak to 68 games. The Saints will play again on Tuesday (1/24) at Pine Manor College at 6:00 pm.

The Men's Volleyball Team lost two nail-biters on Saturday. The Saints took both Mount Ida College and Wentworth Institute of Technology to 5 games, before falling 3-2 in both. Emmanuel was up two games against Mount Ida, lost the third and forth, and then fell 22-20 in the exciting fifth game. Senior outside hitter Stephen Yates (New Bedford, MA) led Emmanuel with 22 kills and 12 digs. Junior outside hitter John Bluhm slammed down 18 kills and recorded 10 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Sophanna Lout (Allston, MA) added 11 kills in his debut. Setters Patrick Bemis (Pittsburgh, PA) and Ricky Wong (West Greenwich, RI) combined for 59 assists in the match, while freshman libero Gregg MacDonald (Wilbraham, MA) recorded a team-high 16 digs.

In the Saints' second match, Emmanuel won the first game and then traded games with Wentworth before losing 15-13 in the fifth set. Again, Yates led the way with 18 kills and 12 digs. Bluhm tallied 16 kills, 7 digs, and 3 aces, while Lout and junior middle blocker Trevor Blanchet (Dracut, MA) each knocked in 9 kills. The Saints are now 0-3 on the season but have lost all three matches in five games. Emmanuel will take on Rivier College on Monday night (1/23) in Nashua, NH at 7:00 pm. The Saints will then host Lasell College on Wednesday night (1/25) at 8:00 pm.

The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed at Brandeis University in the Reggie Payao Memorial Invitational. The men's distance medley team of Carlos Escobar, Mike Thurnauer, Matt Hickey and TJ Griffis broke the school record by almost a minute with a time of 11:16.25. Sophomore Rob Allen (Plymouth, MA) lowered his own school record and qualified for the ECAC Championship in the 55m hurdles. Sophomore Keelyn Blanchfield (East Thetford, VT) also lowered her school record in the 600m. Sophomore Manfred Obisui (Worcester, MA) and freshman Julie Adams (Monson, MA) improved on their personal bests in the 55m. Junior Patrick Chviruk (Worcester, MA) achieved his personal best in the 800m. Senior Laura Mason (Palmyra, NJ) finished third in the weight throw with her best throw of the season (32'0.75") and came close to qualifying for the New England Division III Championship.

Men's Hoop Cruises to Win Over Albertus Magnus

January 18, 2006 - The Men's Basketball Team picked up its 3rd straight win, defeating Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday night, 88-64. Junior guard Toliver Thomas (New Orleans, LA) led Emmanuel with 18 points and a game-high 8 assists. Thomas was perfect from the free throw line, 8 of 8 on the night. Sophomore center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman swingman Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) netted 13 points and grabbed 10 boards, while sophomore point guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Detroit, MI) hit for 16 points in the win. The Saints led 46-31 at the break and never looked back. Emmanuel out-rebounded Albertus Magnus 60-32. The Saints improved their record to 8-6 overall and 6-1 in the GNAC, while the Falcons fell to 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will host Norwich University at 1:00 pm on Saturday (1/21). This is the first game of a double-header with Norwich. The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team will take on the Norwich Cadets at 3:00 pm on Saturday.

The Men's Volleyball Team took 13th ranked Endicott College to 5 games on Tuesday night before losing 3-2 in the season opener. The game scores were: 23-30, 33-31, 21-30, 30-26, 10-15. Senior captain Stephen Yates (New Bedford, MA) led the Saints with 20 kills and 20 digs. Junior captain John Bluhm (Ventura, CA) banged down 19 kills and recorded 15 digs. Senior outside hitter Peter Whaley (Hebron, ME) and junior middle blocker Trevor Blanchet (Dracut, MA) added 10 kills apiece, while senior setter Patrick Bemis (Pittsburgh, PA) dished out 40 assists in the match. The Saints will compete next in a tri-match on Saturday (1/21) at Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Saints will play both WIT and Mount Ida College. Emmanuel's matches begin at 1:15 pm.



McCoy Scores 1,000th Career Point as Emmanuel Rolls Over Albertus Magnus

January 17, 2006 - The Women's Basketball Team cruised to an 85-53 win over Albertus Magnus College on Monday. The Saints were powered by forward Alyssa McCoy's 14 points. The senior captain from Washington, DC also reached the highly coveted 1,000 career point plateau during this game. She now has a collegiate career total of 1,004 points at Emmanuel. McCoy was subsequently named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

Junior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) and sophomore guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) netted 11 points apiece in the game. Sophomore forward Maura Mooney (Essex, VT) came off the bench to contribute 9 points, while junior center Shardae Parker (Waterbury, CT) led the Saints under the boards with 8 rebounds. Emmanuel is now 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC. The Saints will travel to Salem State College on Thursday night (1/19) to take on the Vikings in a 7:00 pm start.

The Men's Basketball Team went 2 and 0 over the long weekend, defeating Southern Vermont College on Saturday and Daniel Webster College on Monday. The Saints rolled past the Mountaineers, 94-81, behind sophomore point guard Rob Williams-Hinton's (Detroit, MI) 21 points and 4 assists. Sophomore center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) pumped in 15 points and pulled down 7 rebounds, while freshman forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) hit for 14 points and grabbed 7 boards. Senior guard Jason Brown (Amherst, MA) and sophomore forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) added 12 points apiece.

The Saints then traveled to Nashua, NH on Monday and stormed past the Eagles of Daniel Webster College, 96-58. Again, five players scored in double figures for Emmanuel. The Saints were led by Levi Smith's 17 points and 9 rebounds. Mack Spellman knocked home 12 points. Junior guard Toliver Thomas (New Orleans, LA), sophomore guard Andre Barbosa (Roxbury, MA), and Brian Lindsey each chipped in with 11 points as Emmanuel picked up its 7th win of the season. The Saints are currently 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will host the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday night (1/18) at 7:00 pm.

The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed in the Tufts University Invitational Meet on Saturday. Several student-athletes put on record-breaking performances. On the women's side, junior Dorothy Shanahan (Accord, NY) broke the school record in the 1500m with a time of 5:42.65 and sophomore Keelyn Blanchfield (East Thetford, VT) followed with a new record in the 600m (1:52.76). Freshman Julie Adams (Monson, MA) broke her own school record in the long jump (14'8.50).

The men's team also had several records broken. Sophomore Rob Allen (Plymouth, MA) finished 4th in the 55m hurdles with a new school record and just barely missed qualifying for the ECAC Championship with a time of 8.16. The men's 4 X 200 meter relay team of Mike Thurnauer (Reading, MA), Carlos Escobar (Cambridge, MA), Manfred Obisui (Worcester, MA), and Bryce McNamee (Grafton, MA) established a new school record (1:43.08). The 4 X 800 meter relay team of Escobar, Matt Hickey (North Attleboro, MA), Patrick Chviruk (Worcester, MA), and TJ Griffis (Green Harbor, MA) also established a new record (8:51.10). Numerous athletes also achieved their personal bests in their respective events, including Brian Anderson (Akron, OH), Brett Adell (Greene, ME) and Ryan Bringhurst (Walpole, MA), who improved on their best times in the 55 meter dash.

Saints Fall to Cadets in O.T.

January 13, 2006 - A battle for the top spot in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference took place in Northfield, VT on Thursday night. The Emmanuel Men's Basketball Team was undefeated in the conference (3-0) heading into the game against Norwich University (9-2, 5-0 GNAC). After 40 minutes of regulation, the game was deadlocked at 76, but Norwich prevailed in the 5-minute overtime, winning 84-82. The Saints were led by junior guard Toliver Thomas (New Orleans, LA) with 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Sophomore center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) netted 13 points, while sophomore forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) and freshman forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) hit for a dozen points apiece. Sophomore point guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Detroit, MI) chipped in with 11 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals. The Saints dropped to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will travel to Bennington, VT on Saturday (1/14) to take on the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College in a 3:00 pm start.

The Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Teams will compete this Saturday (1/14) in the Tufts University Invitational Meet. The meet will begin at 11:00 am in Medford, MA. This is the first meet of the second semester for the track and field teams.



Sharp Shooting Lifts Emmanuel Over Tufts

January 11, 2006 - The Women's Basketball Team shot a season-high 50% from the floor on Tuesday night, helping the Saints defeat Tufts University, 75-61. The Saints trailed by one at the break, but outscored the Jumbos by 15 points in the second half. Emmanuel kept its turnovers to just 13 and managed 19 assists as a team. Senior forward Alyssa McCoy (Washington, DC) hit for 15 points and pulled down 9 rebounds, while sophomore point guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) had 15 points of her own, dished out 5 assists, and made 5 steals. Junior tri-captain LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) pumped in 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, while sophomore guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) dished out a team-high 6 assists in the win. The Saints improved their record to 7-4 overall, while the Jumbos fell to 6-5. Emmanuel will open up conference play this Saturday (1/14) at Southern Vermont College at 1:00 pm.

The Men's Basketball Team remains undefeated in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference after edging Western New England College, 73-68, on Tuesday night. The Saints knocked down an incredible 33 free throws and scored 28 points in the paint to help seal the win. Sophomore center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) led Emmanuel with 22 points (6-8 FG, 10-12 FT) and 5 rebounds. Sophomore forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) netted 18 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Rob Williams Hinton (Detroit, MI) added 11 points, while freshman forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) chipped in with 8 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The Saints are now 5-5 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will travel to Norwich University in Northfield, VT on Thursday (1/12) for a 7:00 pm start.



Men's Hoop Team Downs JWU

January 9, 2006 - The Men's Basketball Team cruised to a 66-55 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon. The Saints shot 48% from the floor and scored 36 of their points in the paint. Sophomore forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) led Emmanuel with 15 points, on 7 for 10 shooting, and 7 rebounds. Sophomore center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) hit for 14 points and grabbed 7 boards. Freshman forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) netted 12 points and pulled down 9 rebounds, while sophomore point guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Detroit, MI) chipped in with 9 points and dished out 7 assists. The Saints improved their record to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will host Western New England College on Tuesday night (1/10) at 7:00 pm.

The Women's Basketball Team was defeated by Bowdoin College on Saturday, 74-53. The Saints trailed by just 7 at the break but were outscored by 14 in the second half. Junior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) led Emmanuel with 16 points, on 8 for 11 shooting, and 7 rebounds. Sophomore guards Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) and Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) combined for 24 points and 5 steals, while senior forward Alyssa McCoy (Washington, DC) pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds. The Saints are now 6-4 overall. They will travel to Tufts University on Tuesday night (1/10) to take on the Jumbos for a 7:00 pm start.



Women's Hoop Team Splits Games in California

January 4, 2006 - The Women's Basketball Team traveled to California over the winter break, playing against two Division III opponents on the west coast. The Saints were defeated in their first game, which took place in Orange, CA. Emmanuel lost, 63-56, to Chapman University. Junior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) led the Saints with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. Senior guard Molly Forbes (N. Berwick, ME) shot 50% from the floor, scoring 12 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Sophomore guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) added 10 points, while sophomore guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) dished out a game-high 5 assists.

In Emmanuel's second game, the Saints rebounded to defeat the University of Redlands, 67-60. Emmanuel got 38 of its 67 points from in the paint. Senior forward Alyssa McCoy (Washington, DC) pumped in a game-high 19 points to lead the Saints. Paez hit for 11 points and made 5 steals, while Johnson chipped in with 10 points in the win. McCoy, Johnson, and junior forward Catherine Gallant (Quaker Hill, CT) pulled down 7 rebounds apiece. Emmanuel is now 6-3 overall. The Saints will take on the 5th ranked Polar Bears of Bowdoin College on Saturday (1/7) in Brunswick, ME. The game will begin at 5:00 pm.
