Dukes Beat Xavier, 4-3, for Best-Ever 5th Place at A-10s
April 22, 2007
Pittsburgh, Pa. - Sixth-seeded Duquesne edged #5 Xavier, 4-3, Sunday morning to capture the team's best-ever fifth place finish in the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Conference Championship Tournament at Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa.
The Dukes, who also captured fifth at the 2002 league championship, did so this year with the team's first win over Xavier in program history.
Xavier took the doubles point for a 1-0 lead entering the singles competition. Two seniors, Jackie Hughes and Alicia McNamara, sophomore Rebecca Poole and freshman Rachel McGowan won their singles matches, giving DU the four points needed for the match victory.
McGowan, down one game, won her second against XU's Kaitlyn Zinn, 6-3, and then won the tiebreaker, 10-5. The freshman was a team best 3-1 in singles and teamed with junior Johanna Bezjak for a squad-best 2-1 mark in doubles.
Duquesne won three of their four championship matches this weekend, losing only to no. 3 seed Charlotte on Friday.
Number two seed Richmond claimed its fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship Title with a 4-0 victory over top-seeded Temple.
