Sep. 27, 2004 PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Faye Barhorst (Ft. Loramie, OH) was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after the middle blocker was named the Most Valuable Player of the Pittsburgh Classic this weekend. Barhorst led UD to the tourney title for the second-straight year with 51 kills and 21 blocks. Barhorst set a Fitzgerald Fieldhouse record with eight solo blocks in a 3-1 win over host Pittsburgh in the final match Saturday and hit .591 in the first match of the day, a 3-0 win over Southern Illinois. After dropping the opener on Friday to Long Island, the Flyers rallied with two wins Saturday, sweeping Southern Illinois and winning 3-1 over Pittsburgh. The host Panthers and Flyers both finished 2-1 for the tournament, but UD earned the Classic title by virtue of the head-to-head win. Pittsburgh was receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25. Barhost hit .500 for the tournament with 51 kills against just seven errors. She also had 12 solo blocks and 21 total for the weekend. She has now hit over .300 in six consecutive matches. The Flyers (8-5) are at Xavier in the Atlantic 10 opener on Wednesday, and host Fordham (Friday, 7:00 p.m.), and Rhode Island (Saturday, 4:00 p.m.) this weekend in A-10 contests. |
