Oct. 2, 2004 DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton used an outstanding defensive effort to sweep Rhode Island, 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 30-27) in Atlantic 10 volleyball action on Saturday at the Frericks Center. UD (11-5, 3-0 A-10) has now won five straight matches and has sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference. With the loss, Rhode Island falls to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in A-10 action. Dayton took control of the match defensively as it tallied a season-high 16.0 blocks and held Rhode Island to an .072 team hitting percentage. Sophomore Faye Barhorst (Fort Loramie, Ohio) recorded a match-high nine blocks (three solo, six assists). Freshman Robynne Green (Palatine, Ill.) added five blocks (one solo, four assists) while classmate Amanda Kenny (Oak Lawn, Ill.) had four block assists of her own for the Flyers. Freshman libero Adrienne Green (Palatine, Ill.) had 15 of Dayton's 50 digs in the match. Senior Christy Utnage (Indianapolis, Ind.) also had 11 for UD. Offensively, The Flyers hit .236 as a team on the strength of 32 assists from junior Nicole Schott (Roscoe, Ill.). Two Flyers reached double digits in kills as Utnage had 14 kills followed by Barhorst with 13. Dayton also took advantage from the service line with eight service aces including three from Utnage and two by Schott. The Flyers take to the road next weekend for a pair of Atlantic 10 matches beginning Friday at Temple. UD remains in Philadelphia on Saturday to take on La Salle. |
