The Flyers will play host to non-conference foe Toledo Wednesday, looking to get back into the win column. After dropping a pair of road games at Charlotte, the Flyers return to UD Softball Stadium, where they are 11-6 all-time. The Flyers sit at 8-15 on the season (2-4 in the Atlantic 10) entering the 3 p.m. doubleheader with the Rockets. Toledo is 8-20 on the season, 1-2 in the MAC.
WHILE WE WERE AWAY
The Flyers fell at Charlotte, the A-10 co-leader, on Saturday. The 49ers took game one, 6-0, and came from behind with seven runs in the sixth inning to take a 8-4 win in game two. Tami Roudebush hit safely in both games to run her hit streak to 11, and Christine Eggers drove in all four runs of game two. She first delivered a bases-clearing triple to give UD a 3-1 lead, and later tacked on an RBI single.
ROUDEBUSH CAN RAKE
With the return of third baseman Blair Crabtree from an injury that cost her almost all of last season, Tami Roudebush moves from third to second base. Luckily for the Flyers, leaving the hot corner hasn't cooled her bat any: The senior leads the team with a .389 batting average and currently is riding an 11-game hit streak. Her batting average is the fifth-highest in the Atlantic 10. She posted seven multi-hit games and hit safely in 15 of the 22 games she's played in. Against Fairfield, she delivered three hits in three trips to the plate, including the first triple of her career. She hit her first home run of the season against Fordham.
AND SHE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE
Collectively, the Flyers are hitting .277 on the season, third in the Atlantic 10 conference. UD is fifth in runs scored, and third in doubles. The Flyers have also struck out the third-fewest times of any A-10 team.
IN THE CIRCLE
Senior starter Melissa Myher is up to 48 wins in her career, just six shy of Sara Hatcher's all-time school record. She recorded her 300th strikeout against FDU in Florida. For the season, she owns a 3.99 ERA with 31 Ks in 66.2 innings of work. Chelsea Grozenski is off to an even hotter start with a 4-2 record, a 2.73 ERA (good for ninth in the A-10) and 37 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. She has two shutouts on the season and also threw four innings of hitless relief against Colgate. She allowed just three hits while shuting out Rider and two hits while blanking Army.
THREE RUNS OR MORE
The Flyers are 7-7 this season when scoring three or more runs. Dayton was 18-6 last season when the team scored at least three runs and dating back to the start of the 2001 season, UD is 83-27 when getting to the three-run mark.
LEGGO MY EGGO
Sophomore first basemen Christine Eggers is building off a solid freshman campaign by posting a .333 batting average this year. The Flyers lead off hitter has reached base at a .452 clip, with 14 walks to go with her 23 hits. She has scored 13 runs on the season and slugged a pair of doubles and three triples. She's upped her career average to .297, fifth-best all-time at UD.
TAMSYN `ELLOUGH
That's not a typo, there's just no K in Tamsyn Kellough this season.
UD's RBI leader has come to the plate 82 times this season and struck out just five times. The junior is hitting a robust .324 on the season with 23 hits in 71 at bats with six doubles, a triple, and a home run. She's driven in 14 runs and with six walks and a hit-by-pitch has reached base 30 times against those five Ks. Kellough is also switching over to centerfielder from her left field spot last season.
DAYTON DEBUTS
Red-shirt freshman Blair Crabtree and freshmen Shalyn Adams and Mollie Schrank are off to impressive starts in their debut seasons. Adams, UD's number two hitter, is 22-for-73 (.301) with six doubles and eight walks. Against La Salle, she hit her first collegiate home run in UD's 8-7 eighth-innning win. She also delivered a three-run game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game against Fordham. Crabtree, who missed all of last year due to injury, is hitting .284 to open the year. She leads UD with three home runs, including her first career blast, against Eastern Kentucky on March 4. Schrank has 15 hits in 52 at bats for a .288 average with three doubles. Against La Salle, she beat out three infield hits. The freshman outfielder is also documenting UD road trips with an online journal at DaytonFlyers.com.
