April 5, 2006

Box Score

The Flyers fell in game one of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday to the Toledo Rockets by a score of 8-7.

Dayton controlled game one before a five-run outburst by the Rockets in the fifth inning. UD opened the game with a double from Christine Eggers and a sacrifice fly from Roudebush, on which she reached base on an error. Tamsyn Kellough beat out a fielder's choice and Lauren Schneider deivered a single for a 2-0 lead. Sheena Rothwell followed with an infield single before Sierra Pereira got out of the inning with two runners left on base.

The Flyers added a run in the second on a single by Mollie Schrank and an RBI double from Roudebush. But the Rockets bounced back in the fourth, with a run on a RBI double from Sara Agnew.

In the fifth, the Rockets scored five runs, aided by two UD errors. The inning opened with a throwing error on a bunt attempt, and after a walk and three singles, Valerie Moxim hit a grand slam to left center field.

Dayton tied the game in the bottom of the inning, as Kellough reached on an error and Blair Crabtree singled to right field. Rothwell singled home a run, and Ellie Malchow plated another run by singling up the middle. But Pereira escaped, leaving the bases loaded.

Toledo broke the tie in the sixth. After a single to open the inning, Gina Muratori doubled to right center but Malchow threw out the runner at the plate. However, the next hitter ripped a shot up the middle, plating Muratori. After a UD miscue, the Rockets singled in an insurance run for a 8-6 lead.

The Flyers rallied in the seventh as Rothwell singled down the right field line and Malchow doubled to center field to cut it to 8-7. Schrank singled through the left side, but Malchow had to hold up at third and Pereira got Eggers to grounded out to end the game.

Chelsea Grozenski took the loss, falling to 4-3, allowing five earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched with three strikeouts.

Pereira allowed 12 hits, striking out three, but allowed just three earned runs as UD left nine runners on base.

Rothwell went three-for-four with a pair of RBI. Malchow went two-for-four with two RBI.

The Flyers are in action for game two at 5:20 approximately.
