Dayton, Ohio - Dara Elk's game winner in the 41st minute gave the Flyers (6-3-3) a 1-0 victory over Duquesne (3-7-1), and their fifth consecutive win Friday night at Baujan Field. The Flyers remain the only undefeated team in the conference and sit a top the A-10 standings with a perfect 4-0 record. The cold and windy weather seemed to be a factor early, as neither team could get warm as they combined for only five shots in the first 20 minutes of play. In the 21st minute freshman Mandi Bäck decided to heat things up. Bäck's shot from inside the 18-box went just wide of the goal, but it served to fire up the Flyers. Just five minutes later, Bäck dribbled down the left side taking on two Duquesne defenders before ripping a left-footed shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down off the goal line. Duqesne goalkeeper Virginia Bondi quickly scooped the rebound for her third save in a four minute span. With 4:50 left in the half, junior Dara Elk made sure there were no close calls as she dribbled inside the box and sent a lofting shot over the Duquesne keeper for her third goal of the season. In the second half the Flyers came out firing, hitting five shots in the first 15 minutes, all going on goal. Dayton sophomore goalie Stacy Chew was the key for the Flyers in the second half. Chew replaced starter Tasha Dittamore, who left the game at half due to an injury, and made three big saves on three Duquesne breakaways by Faye Rasmussen late in the second half to seal the game and the victory for the Flyers. The UD women return to action on Sunday (Oct. 15) as they host the nationally-ranked Saint Louis University Billikens at 1 p.m. at Baujan Field. |
