May 9, 2007 Since finishing fifth at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship, the Dayton Flyers have received nothing but good news. UD looks to continue their positive momentum at the Dad Vail Regatta on Friday, May 11 in Philadelphia. The Lightweight 8 has won the Dad Vail Regatta twice in a row and at the A-10 Championship won its race for the third year in a row. Last week, the Lightweight 8 maintained their No. 10 national ranking in the US Rowing Coaches Poll. At the 2007 A-10 Women's Rowing Championship, the Lightweight 8 won its race for the third year in a row. A day later, sophomore Jeanna Heink was named to the 2007 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference rowing team. Heink, who rows on the UD's Atlantic 10 Champion Lightweight 8 boat, is the only sophomore selected on the 10-member academic all-conference team. The Lexington, Ky., native is a chemical engineering major and showcases a 4.0 cumulative grade point average. Dayton's Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, and Novice 4 will also compete in the race. The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States. More than 100 schools have entered to date. Over 30 states will be represented along with several Canadian provinces making up a field of almost 120 colleges, universities and service academies. The Dad Vail is named for an early 20th century rowing coach, Harry Emerson "Dad" Vail of the University of Wisconsin. He was held in such fond regard by the Penn founders, Lev Bret and `Rusty' Callow, that they named the regatta for him. |
