Oct. 31, 2004 Senior forward Chris Rolfe (Kettering, OH) scored two more goals to lead the University of Dayton men's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout over La Salle, Sunday at Baujan Field, following up his two-goal game Friday. Omar Jarun (Peachtree City, GA) scored his eighth and Richie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH) tallied the first of his career as UD improved to 10-6-1 overall and 7-3-0 in the Atlantic 10 and secured a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Flyers opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Damion Blackburn (Beavercreek, OH) served a cross for Jarun, who headed it in for his eighth goal of the season and his fifth game-winner. Just before halftime, Rolfe send a corner kick into the box where Nate Darr (Centerville, OH), Aaron Swanson (Ft. Wayne, IN) each got a head on it before the red-shirt freshman Campbell headed it past LaSalle keeper Stash Graham for a 2-0 Flyers lead and his first goal. In the second half, Rolfe was taken down just outside the box, giving him a restart which he slipped past the wall and past La Salle's second keeper, Kyle Perdelwitz for his fifth of the year. With five minutes remaining, Rolfe and senior Tye Stebbins (Zionsville, IN) came in on the keeper alone, with Rolfe feeding Stebbins for a shot that Perdelwitz stopped but couldn't control. Rolfe knocked home the rebound for his sixth of the year. Head coach Dave Schureck removed his seniors - Rolfe, Stebbins and Nick Sulich (Columbus, OH) one-by-one with fellow senior Steve Ladislaw (Philadelphia, PA) ineligible for the contest due to a red card. Sulich made his first career start and logged 23 minutes. The Flyers have never allowed a goal with Sulich in the match in his five career appearances. Matt Troop (Peachtree City, GA) recorded five saves for his second shutout of the season and Dasan Robinson (Elyria, OH) headed a dangerous chance off the line for a team save. The Flyers out-shot La Salle 16-14 for the match and held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Dayton can lock up a bye to the semifinals with a win next Saturday at Xavier (7:00 p.m. kickoff) and can earn a share of the regular season championship - and the #1 overall seed in the A-10 tourney - with a win at Xavier and a Duquesne loss to St. Bonaventure next Saturday. The Atlantic 10 Championship begins November 11 with the quarterfinals (#4 seed vs #5 and #3 vs #6), and continues with the semifinals (#1 vs lowest; #2 vs highest) the following day and the Championship on Sunday, November 14. |
