YOUTH WILL BE SERVED DURING UD MEN'S SOCCER MARRIOTT CLASSIC

Caleb Lindemann scored two goals in the 3-0 win over Belmont.

Sept. 6, 2006

DAYTON, Ohio - Not to jinx Caleb Lindemann, but a sophomore slump doesn't appear likely. He broke Carmel (Ind.) High School's scoring record for a sophomore. Through four games in this season, he ranks among the top 10 in the Atlantic 10 Conference in six offensive categories.

Lindemann scored two goals within 14 minutes to help the Flyers to a 3-0 victory over Belmont this past Monday.

He leads the Flyers into their Marriott Classic against Western Illinois (3-1-0) after Birmingham-Southern (0-4-0) takes on IUPUI (3-0-1) at 6 p.m. Friday at Baujan Field.

In conjunction with the United States Youth Soccer Association, UD will celebrate Youth Soccer Month Friday and Sunday. Youth wearing a UD soccer camp t-shirt will be admitted free. All other youth wearing a soccer uniform will be admitted for $1.

Although he hasn't scored this season, freshman Patrick Polito is headed in the right direction. Polito is tied with Lindemann for the team lead in shots on goal.

Freshmen have nine of UD's 20 shots on goal this season. Jeff Popella is second on the team with three and Alex Torda is tied for third with two. Popella, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference's preseason all-rookie team, was listed as one of College Soccer News' Freshmen to Watch this season.

"The freshmen are working extremely hard this year. They are a very talented group that seems to get better each game," UD head coach Dennis Currier said. "Offensively, Jeff Popella, Patrick Polito and Ben Murray have shown flashes of excellent play. They are working hard to learn our offensive patterns. Once they refine their talent, each of them will become impact players for the Flyers. Ryan Handbury and Randy Dennis have been standouts for us defensively."

The Dayton Flyer Marriott Classic wraps up at 1 p.m. Sunday when Western Illinois plays Birmingham Southern. UD versus IUPUI follows that game.
