DECAMPS, TORDA GIVE FLYERS A WINNING FINISH TO SPRING SEASON

Freshman Alex Torda scored with less than a minute remaining to help UD defeat Bowling Green State

April 24, 2007

Sophomore Florian DeCamps and freshman Alex Torda supplied the offensive power Saturday as the Dayton Flyers defeated the Bowling Green State Falcons 2-1 in their final spring game of the season.

Earlier in the day, UD battled the Kentucky Wildcats to a 0-0 tie despite having numerous chances to break the stalemate.

Overall, Flyer head coach Dennis Currier thought his team competed hard in both games.

"The team worked extremely hard this spring and we certainly improved as a squad," Currier said. "Our schedule was difficult and we responded very well."

One of the pleasant surprises during the spring season was how the underclassmen responded to the competition. On Saturday the Flyers overcame a series of obstacles on the way to finishing the spring season with a 4-2-1 record.

"We are still very young having at least six freshmen in the line-up," said Currier. "I was very pleased at how well we competed this spring and hopefully we can continue to improve and have a very successful fall."

Against the Falcons, Decamps scored in the first half to take a 1-0 Flyer lead into halftime. In the second half, Bowling Green State equalized the game though with two minutes to play.

That set up Torda's heroics when he scored a header off of a free kick delivered from Gary Long to win the match.

"I was very pleased with our second half performance," Currier said. "BGSU has a dangerous counter attack and we prevented them from getting out of their half but still had problems converting a goal. I thought we responded very well when they equalized and ended our spring on a very high note."

In the first game, the Flyers worked extremely hard and had the better chances but were unable to capitalize. The positive side was the UD defense recorded its second shutout of spring.

"I thought we matched their grit from the start of the game," said Currier. "We eventually settled and played some good soccer but could not convert."

With the spring season completed, Dayton will begin the 2007 fall campaign in late August. Check DaytonFlyers.com for the latest schedule updates and team information.
