RICHMOND, Virg. - The Flyers pelted the Spiders all night, but Omar Jarun's fourth goal of the year was the only goal the Flyers could muster in a 1-1 tie Friday night for the University of Dayton men's soccer team. Senior goalkeeper Nick Tarkany made five saves in net, and Dayton out-shot Richmond 28-16 in the double-overtime draw. The Flyers are now 6-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Atlantic 10. The first half was even as each team got off eight shots and neither found the back of the net. Richmond's Kyle Richards scored 4:26 into the second half for a 1-0 lead for the Spiders (4-4-4; 0-1-2 A-10). Dayton answered in the 59th minute after a corner kick was knocked down by a Spider defender, the ball came to Jarun (Peachtree City, GA) who dribbled in from the right side and ripped a shot past UR keeper Eric Sciocchetti. The goal was Jarun's fourth of the year which ties him for the team lead with Lubomir Bogdanov (Sofia, Bulgaria), and Jonathan Welsh (St. Charles, MO). Jarun's four assists on the season give him the team lead in points with 12. Sciocchetti made 13 saves, including nine in the second half, as the Flyers put a barrage of shots on the Spiders. UD owned a 16-6 edge in shots in the second half, and a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal in the second stanza. In the overtime periods, Dayton out-shot Richmond 4-2, and put two shots on goal, both by Damion Blackburn (Beavercreek, OH). Tarkany (Miamisburgh, OH), seeing his first action since the Flyers' third game of the season, was not tested in the overtimes. Tarkany was re-inserted between the pipes by head coach Dennis Currier for the match. Currier switched from Tarkany to senior Steve Ladislaw (Philadelphia, PA) after the Flyers lost back-to-back 1-0 games on the road. Dayton will meet Charlotte on Sunday in an Atlantic 10 match at 1:00 p.m. It marks the first ever meeting in men's soccer between the Flyers and 49ers, who just joined the A-10 this season. |
