FLYERS OUTSHOOT NO. 1 SMU BUT FALL 1-0

Flyers give top-ranked Mustangs a run for their money at University of New Mexico tournament

Sept. 17, 2006

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton (4-4) held top-ranked SMU (8-0-1) without a shot on goal in the first half and posted the most shots of any SMU opponent this year but fell 1-0 Sunday in a tournament at the University of New Mexico.

"They fought hard and believed in themselves," UD head coach Dennis Currier said. "(SMU head coach Schellas Hyndman) congratulated us and said we had a good game plan that got them off their game."

The Flyers held 18-14 and 5-2 advantages in shots and shots on goal, respectively. It was just the third time this season SMU had that few shots on a goal in a game and only the fourth time SMU had given up that many shots on goal in a game this season.

Before Sunday, SMU averaged 17.5 shots and eight shots on goal per outing while holding opponents to an average of 8.6 shots and three shots on goal.

SMU's first shot on goal, by Scott Geppert in the 59th minute, scooted past UD backup goalie Zac Gibbens for a 1-0 lead. Gibbens was playing instead of Nick Tarkany who was injured shortly before Friday's game versus Tulsa. Tarkany ranked in the top 25 nationally in two categories in the latest NCAA rankings.

"Zac stepped up and had a great tournament for us," Currier said. "Tarkany should be ready for Wright State."

UD's Caleb Lindemann hit a post in the 70th minute.

"I thought it was in," Currier said. "It hit the inside of the post and came out. We also had three incredible chances in the first half. But, (SMU goalie Matt) Wideman made some great saves."

The Flyers tested Wideman all the way to the end. Wideman stopped UD shots at the 81:35 and 82:43 marks by Tyler Imbrogno and Lindemann, respectively.
