PHILADELPHIA (Sports Network) - Dayton capped off a fantastic season by beating Albany 42-21 in the Gridiron Classic on Saturday and the Flyers were rewarded by being named the unanimous winner of the Sports Network's final Mid-Major poll released Tuesday. Dayton (11-1) captured all 30 first-place votes and will be honored Dec. 13 in Chattanooga, Tenn. when the Flyers will receive the Sports Network Cup at the annual Sports Network Awards ceremony. The Flyers have been ranked first since beating previously No. 1-ranked San Diego 35-16 on Oct. 27 and have received unanimous support in the poll since beating Butler 61-0 on Nov. 3. San Diego, which began the year as the preseason No. 1, was named second on all 30 ballots after finishing the season 9-2. The Toreros' only losses were to Dayton and in the final seconds against UC Davis. Albany remained No. 3 in the poll, despite the loss to Dayton. The Great Danes won the Northeast Conference title and ended up 8-4 against a tough non- conference schedule that included a win over playoff-bound Fordham and losses to Montana, Colgate, Hofstra and Dayton. The rest of the poll included Morehead State at No. 4 and Iona at No. 5, followed by Wagner, Drake, Duquesne, Davidson and Central Connecticut State. The Sports Network FCS Mid-Major Top 10 poll includes the 20 programs of the MAAC, NEC, and Pioneer Leagues, which play at a non-scholarship or limited scholarship level. An updated poll, which is based on the votes of selected media members and FCS mid-major Sports Information Directors, is announced each Monday during the regular season.
