Senior Brandon Godsey rushed for a touchdown, while senior John Hoppe made nine tackles and recovered a fumble, but the Dayton Flyers lost their fifth-straight, 21-9 to the Drake Bulldogs behind 3,863 at Welcome Stadium. Godsey finished the day with 25 yards rushing on nine attempts and senior Carlton McFadgen caught five passes for 71 yards for the Flyers (3-5, 0-5 PFL). The windy conditions held Flyers quarterback Kevin Hoyng to 146 yards passing on 12 for 24 attempts. With his performance, Hoyng made Flyers history by breaking the UD career record for total offense. Hoyng eclipses Kelly Spiker, who previously held the record with 5,138 total yards. Turnovers and miscues hindered the Flyers chances on offense. Hoyng was picked off once and UD fumbled the ball five times, losing two to the Bulldogs. Drake tailback Scott Phaydavong led the way with two touchdowns and 171 yards on 31 carries. The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the PFL. Dayton got on the board first thanks to some help from the Drake special teams. On fourth down, a snap over the head of Bulldog punter Brandon Wubs set up a fumble recovery by the Flyers' Hoppe at the Drake four-yard line. That set up Godsey's fourth rushing touchdown of the season to put the Flyers up 7-0. However, the Flyers defense couldn't hold on to the lead as Drake responded on its first possession of the second quarter. Fullback Willie Cashmore rushed to the left side capping an 11-play, 70-yard drive to tie the game at 7-7. On the ensuing Dayton possession, senior Nick Ruhe caught a pass from Hoyng at the Drake 36 only to fumble and turn the ball over. The Bulldogs drove down the field and took a 14-7 lead on a rushing touchdown by Phaydavong from 12 yards out. Drake extended their lead to 21-7 in the third quarter when Phaydavong ran 51 yards for his second touchdown of the afternoon. The score capped a four-play, 63-yard drive for the Bulldogs. As the third quarter came to a close, the Flyers drove down to the Drake six-yard line when on third down Hoyng dropped the ball at the 15 trying to cut to the end zone. Drake linebacker James Adams picked up the loose ball spoiling the Flyers drive. In the fourth, the Flyers picked up a safety when another snap flew over the head of Wubs. With the ball two yards from the back of the end zone, Wubs tapped out of bounds to force the safety and cut the Flyers deficit to 21-9. That would be all from the Flyers on the offensive end as Drake controlled the time of possession battle holding on to the ball for 32:10 overall. UD drove down to the Bulldogs 29-yard line with less than a minute remaining, but a Hoyng interception on third down killed the rally. Ruhe caught two passes for 43 yards and senior Greg Wimberly led UD in rushing with 34 yards on 10 carries. Out of Hoppe's nine tackles, three were solo and one was for a loss. Cashmore added 56 yards on 12 carries, while Adams made 13 tackles, forced a fumble and recorded a sack. It's only the fourth time out of 23 games in the all-time series Drake has defeated Dayton. Dayton returns to action for Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 4 at home against the Valparaiso Crusaders beginning at 1 p.m. |
