Box Score

DAYTON - A grand slam by Bryan Chandler capped a six-run eighth inning rally and secured a 7-5 come-from-behind win by Dayton over Otterbein Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Stadium.

Dayton (31-21) is now just one win shy of matching its school record for wins in a season and has won five of its last six games overall. Otterbein heads to the NCAA Division III Tournament Thursday with a 28-15 overall record.

Chandler finished 1-for-3 with his seventh home run and second grand slam of the season.

Overall UD was out hit 9-8 but had multi-hit performances from Galen Schumm and Bobby Getty. Schumm was 2-for-4 including his seventh homer of the year, two runs scored and an RBI. Getty finished 2-for-2 and was hit by pitch twice while scoring a run and driving in one.

Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Brandon Godzik drew a bases loaded walk for his 40th RBI of the season as part of a 1-for-3 afternoon which included a run scored.

Michael DeLuca singled and scored off the bench while Todd Presar also scored as a pinch runner for the Flyers who improved to 21-3 this season when scoring more than five runs.

While the Cardinals used nine pitchers on the day, UD countered with just three. Senior Drew Chesebro got the start for Dayton and allowed four runs on six hits over six innings pitched while striking out three batters.

Brooks Hazelbaker got the win for the Flyers out of the bullpen and improved to 3-1 on the season. He surrendered just one run on three hits over two innings pitched and struck out one batter.

Craig Rohren finished the day on the mound and earned his sixth save this year with a perfect ninth inning.

The game began as a dual between Chesebro and the Otterbein pitching staff. OC scratched a run across in third and three more in the sixth to build a 4-0 advantage midway through the sixth inning.

Schumm got UD on the board in the sixth with a two-out homer to right but Otterbein answered in the top of the seventh and Dayton trailed 5-1 at the seventh-inning stretch.

DeLuca led off the eighth with a single to right center. Then after two outs, Schumm singled to right and gave UD runners on the corners. Getty singled through the left side to plate DeLuca and send Schumm to second. Benoit then loaded the bases with another single to right and Godzik worked a walk to score Dayton's second run of the inning. Chandler then swung the game in favor of the Flyers with a grand slam over the right centerfield wall to cap the six-run rally and give UD a 7-5 victory.

Dayton wraps up its A-10 regular season at Time Warner Cable Stadium with a three-game series against Richmond this week. The Flyers and Spiders will play a doubleheader Thursday at noon and a nine-inning game Friday also at noon.
