DAYTON - Lead off batter Michael Massa reached base all four times he came to the plate and scored three times as Dayton beat Duquesne 6-2 Saturday in the opener of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader on Dedication Day at Time Warner Cable Stadium. The win lifted UD to 25-18 overall and 10-6 in A-10 play while visiting Duquesne fell to 13-28, 8-8 A-10. Massa doubled and singled while walking twice as part of a 2-for-2 performance which included three runs scored and two stolen bases. Freshman Jeff Mercer also had a pair of singles and two RBI while Bobby Getty was 1-for-4 with three-RBI for the Flyers who out hit the Dukes 8-6. Brandon Godzik and Bryan Chandler singled and scored for UD while Joe McSoley walked and scored once. Junior Craig Stammen got a complete-game win on hill for Dayton and improved to 6-6 on the year. He allowed just one earned run on six hits while striking out eight batters and surrendering one walk. UD jumped on the visitors from Duquesne early with a run in the first inning. After Massa led off with a walk, Schumm blooped a single to right center to give UD runners on first and second with no outs. Massa then stole third base and scored on an RBI groundout by Getty to put the Flyers ahead 1-0. Dayton added another run with the top of its order in the third as Massa began the frame with a double. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on another RBI groundout by Getty as UD took a 2-0 advantage. The Flyers padded their lead with two more runs in the fourth on a RBI single from Mercer and a bases loaded walk by Schumm. Chandler and McSoley each scored as UD built a 4-0 lead at the end of the fourth inning. UD stretched its lead to 6-0 with an fifth-inning RBI single off the bat of Mercer and an RBI ground ball by Getty in the sixth inning. Duquesne threatened in the seventh with two runs on three hits, but Stammen closed out the game with a strikeout and a ground ball to first to preserve a 6-2 Flyer victory. |
