Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Panthers men's hockey team not only had a great weekend on the ice by sweeping ACHA Div. I Liberty University, they also dedicated their time to helping out at the Grand Rapids Housing Commission. Ten players led by Assistant Coach Phil Sweeney and Davenport University Staff Member Alexis DeVries helped out by donating numerous cans and serving breakfast to the needy in downtown Grand Rapids. On Friday night, the Panthers hosted Liberty University and during the game the Davenport Men's Hockey team collected canned goods to be donated to the Grand Rapids Housing Commission. After working with the group earlier in the season on a very successful coat and sweater drive, the Panthers continued their support by collecting two full boxes (60+ cans) for the drive. The Panthers continued their volunteering efforts by cooking many residents a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning. Ten Davenport Student athletes arrived at 9:30 AM and cooked the meals from scratch and served the residents. The guys also sat down and visited with the residents while they ate their pre-game breakfast. After everyone had breakfast, the Panthers were treated to a tour of the housing commission and their very extraordinary chapel. "When they said chapel, we thought it was going to be something small like you would see in Las Vegas, stated Junior Rick Gadwa. It was very impressive and the detailed architecture was very remarkable. The residents are very proud of the chapel and they should be and I am glad they showed all of us the historic facility before we left." Panthers in attendance: Alexis Devries - Organizer, Rick Gadwa - Organizer, Jonah Rogowski, Chris Joswiak, Adam Thomas, Chad Rutzel, Justin Poorman, Dayne Gluting, Brit Ouelette, Wes Baughman, and Scott Knight. |
