No. 73 Northridge Defeats No. 67 Cal Poly, 4-3, in Big West Home Opener
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Despite missing one of its top perfomers, the No. 73 Cal State Northridge women’s tennis team (3-0) defeated No. 67 Cal Poly, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex. Junior Victoria Brymer made a lasting impression in her CSUN home debut, defeating Brittany Blaylock, 3-6, 6-2 and 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match.
The Matadors faced the Mustangs without the services of senior Canna Furuta, who missed the match due to injury. Still, under the guidance of head coach Gary Victor, the Matadors persevered to defeat their Big West Conference rival.
In doubles action, Brymer and sophomore Kristy Fournell fell in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-3, to Blaylock and Steffi Wong. However, the Matadors would earn the doubles point as the tandem of Kanykey Koichumanova and Brooke Doane def. Shannon Brady and Amy Markhoff, 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles match and the team of Sandra Kukla and Nina Jaworowski def. Diane Filip and Maria Malec, 8-4.
In singles action, Koichumanova outlasted Wong, 6-4, 4-6 and 6-0, to capture the No. 2 singles match and Kukla bested Brady, 6-1 and 7-6 (7-3) in the third singles match.
Cal Poly captured the No. 4 singles match as Whintey Peterson def. Fournell, 6-1 and 6-3. The Mustangs also won the No. 5 singles match as Filip defeated Jaworowski, 6-3 and 6-1, and the No. 6 singles match, as Malec def. Doane, 6-1 and 7-5.
The Matadors return to action on Feb. 23 when they head to Stockton to face Pacific at 1 p.m. in another Big West showdown. The next day, Feb. 24, CSUN will square off against another Big West opponent, UC Davis, at 11 a.m in Davis.
