Matadors Sweep UCSD to Claim Home Opener
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women’s tennis team (2-0) swept UC San Diego, 7-0, in its 2008 home opener at the Matador Tennis Complex. Seven different Matadors recorded victories in the match over the Tritons.

Northridge picked up the doubles’ point, surrendering only seven games to UCSD. The No. 1 pairing of Victoria Brymer and Canna Furuta defeated Ina Dan and Taskeen Bains, 8-2. In the second doubles pairing, Kanykey Koichumanova and Brooke Doane bested Kimmi Dao and Valerie Tang, 8-3. Finally in the No. 3 match, Sandra Kukla and Nina Jaworowski defeated Justine Fonte and Dalya Perelman, 8-2.

In singles play, the match got tighter. Koichumanova defeated Dan, 6-4 and 7-5, in the No. 1 match. Kukla bested topped Dao, 6-2 and 6-1, in the No. 2 spot while Jaworowski handled Perelman, 7-5 and 6-1, in the third match.

In the second half of singles play, Furuta defeated Fonte, 6-1 and 7-5, while Kristy Fournell defeated Natalie Varnay, 6-3 and 6-4 , in the fifth match. Finally, Doane defeated Tessa Tran, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) and 10-7 to complete the sweep for CSUN.

Head Coach Gary Victor and Northridge host Cal Poly in a Big West Conference showdown Saturday at the Matador Tennis Complex. Doubles action is slated to start at noon.
