Titans Sweep 49ers...Up Next, Fullerton Regional

May 28, 2006

Box Score

A seven-run fourth inning, and a five-run fifth propelled the No. 2 Cal State Fullerton to a 13-2 victory over Long Beach State in the second game of a double header and the regular-season finale at Blair Field.

Fullerton finishes the regular season with a 43-13 overall record, and a conference best 18-3 record, and await Monday morning's announcement of Regional pairings. The team picked up its 14th series win and its 9th sweep of the season in 16 opportunities.

Long Beach State falls to 29-27, 12-9.

Cal State Fullerton out-scored Long Beach 25-5 on the weekend, and finished 2006 season beating the 49ers six times without a loss, accomplishing the feat for the first time since 1985.

Justin Turner extended his season-high hitting streak to 15 games with a four-hit day to pace the Titan hit parade that saw Fullerton tally a season-high 19 hits on the day.

Blake Davis, Brett Pill, Brandon Tripp, Matt Fahey, Clark Hardman and Evan McArthur each collected two hits apiece, to back Dustin Miller (11-1) who notched his 11th win of the year in a reduced five-inning effort in the 3:31 affair. Miller allowed a pair of unearned runs before giving way to the bullpen of Justin Klipp, John Estes, Dave Pherrin and Ryan Paul, who surrendered just five hits and one run over the final four innings.

In his tenth season as skipper, Head Coach George Horton moved passed Fresno State's Bob Bennett in Big West Conference wins with his 188th-career victory, and moved into second place behind Dave Snow (Long Beach State), the league's all-time winningest coach.

Fullerton will see who they will be hosting tomorrow morning, as 64 teams will be announced to the NCAA College World Series Tournament on ESPN at 9:30 a.m. PDT.
