Titans Take First Game of Double Header

May 28, 2006

Box Score

Long Beach, Calif. - No. 2 Cal State Fullerton (42-13, 17-3) defeated Big West Conference rival Long Beach State (29-26, 12-8), 10-2, in the first game of Sunday afternoon double-header at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

Lauren Gagnier (12-4) earned his league-leading 12th victory as the Titans pounded out 15 hits to support his five-inning effort. The junior surrendered just four hits, and two runs (one earned), while striking out four 49ers en route to the Titans' 42nd-win of the season.

Seven Titans had two-or-more hits led by Cory Vanderhook who finished 3-for-3 with a run an RBI. Justin Turner, Blake Davis, Jared Clark, Evan McArthur, Brandon Tripp and Joe Turgeon each contributed a pair of hits each, with Joe Turgeon leading all players with three RBI in just his eighth start of 2006.

Fullerton improved to 31-5 when they score first, as they got to starter Donnie Hume (3-4) for four runs in his 3 2/3 inning of work, handing the Long Beach lefty his fourth loss of the season. Long Beach used six arms on the day with Just Bryan Shaw and Shane Peterson leaving the game without surrendering a run.

McArthur blasted his sixth home run of the year off of Long Beach reliever Vance Worley in the fourth inning, and Justin Turner extended his hitting streak to 14 games to lead off that frame with a single.

The Titans will look to sweep Long Beach State at Blair Field for the first time since the 2004 National Championship season.

Titan Notes: Fullerton has been selected by the NCAA to be one of 16 schools to host a Regional, with games set to begin next weekend at Goodwin Field. The 64-team field will be announced Monday morning...
