Enright Shuts Down Titans for 11th Win

May 2, 2007

Box Score

Malibu, Calif. - Four Waves had two-or-more hits, and Barry Enright handed in eight innings of two-hit, shutout ball as No. 17 Pepperdine defeated Cal State Fullerton, 7-2, in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. . Cal State Fullerton dropped its fourth game in a row, and lowered its record to 27-16. Pepperdine snaps its three-game losing streak and improves to 31-16.

The Waves scored six times in the first three frames to give winning pitcher Barry Enright (11-2) a commanding lead to work with. Enright carried a no-hitter for 5.1 before Josh Fellhauer broke it up with a bunt back to the pitcher, with no one covering first base. His stuff was not overpowering as he struck out just 3, but he faced just four Titans over the minimum in eight innings of work.

Titan starter Cory Arbiso (0-1), in his first start of the season, was tagged for four runs (two earned) on five hits and suffered his first loss of the season. Pepperdine tacked on a pair of runs off Paul Canedo and Nolan Bruyninckx courtesy of a third-inning, two-run home run by Ryan Heroy off Bruyninckx to extend to a 6-0 lead after three.

The waves plated their seventh run in the seventh using a hit batter, two singles and three stolen bases in the inning off Mike Anderson, making his collegiate debut.

Fullerton got it digits in the run column as Evan McArthur singled home both John Curtis and Billy Marcoe who were aboard on a hit batter and an error on the centerfielder, respectively, in the ninth inning. Both runs were unearned off reliever Jason Dominguez in his inning of relief for Enright.

Nick Mahin collected the only other Titan hit, a chopper over the third baseman's head in the top of the seventh. Fullerton has now been three-hit five times in 2007.

Danny Worth and Eric Thames each had two hits, while Donald Brown and Luke Salas led all players with three hits apiece.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action Friday night as they host UC Santa Barbara in the first game of a three-game Big West Conference series at Goodwin Field. First pitch Friday night is set for 7 p.m.

NOTES: Mike Anderson made his first collegiate appearances coming off Tommy John surgery... Ryan Ackland made his first appearance since Feb. 27...Pepperdine was 7-for7 in stolen base attempts with three of them resulting in Wave runs.
