Sergio Brown is in his first year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Cal State Fullerton, but is no stranger to the Titan family. He served as the team's administrative assistant in both 2002 and 2003, and was a middle infielder for Augie Garrido on the Titans' 1995 national championship squad. Brown's duties will include working with the Titan outfielders while also providing the team's hitting instruction. Brown spent the last the last three seasons in South Orange County assisting Dave Serrano at Big West Conference rival UC Irvine and headed up the Anteater recruiting as well. In 2007, Brown's recruiting class was nationally recognized by Baseball America (14th) and Collegiate Baseball (22nd) and proved successful as Irvine went on to advance to the College World Series for the first time in the program's history. As a team, the 2007 Anteater offense led the Big West Conference in almost every category including batting average (.317), slugging percentage (.447), on-base percentage (.393) and hits (697), under Brown's tutelage. Brown's coaching career started in 1996 at Cypress College where he spent six seasons at the junior college powerhouse, serving as the team's primary recruiting coordinator and the base running and defensive coach. While at Cypress he helped guide the Chargers to a California Community College State Championship in 1997 and a pair of runner-up finishes in 1996 and 1999. Among the players he helped develop are four current major leaguers - UCLA All-Pac 10 outfielder Ben Francisco (Cleveland), Texas Tech All-American Keith Ginter (Milwaukee), Wake Forest All-American Cory Sullivan (Colorado) and catcher Gerald Laird (Texas). Before concluding his playing career at Fullerton, Brown competed at Cal Poly Pomona from 1991-93 where the Broncos won a CCAA championship his rookie season. Brown, 34, holds a master's degree in Education from Azusa Pacific and a bachelor's degree in English from Cal State Fullerton. He lives in Whittier with his wife, Olivia, and son, Vincent (7). The Browns are awaiting the birth of their second son, Cruz, whose arrival is due any day now. |
