Vikings Blanked By Valparaiso

Sept. 5, 2003

Box Score

VALPARAISO, Ind. - Playing in front of a partisan crowd of more than 600 strong, Valparaiso (6-0) proved to be too much for Cleveland State (4-1) Friday night in a battle of unbeatens at the Popcorn Classic. The Crusaders held the Vikings to a .061 hitting percentage on their way to 30-18, 30-26, 30-22 victory.

"Valparaiso played extremely well -- they have a very nice team," said head coach Chuck Voss. "It was a great atmosphere here tonight and we didn't respond very well. We have to play better tomorrow.

Junior middle hitter Jamie Bouyer (Bedford Heights, Ohio/Chanel) led CSU with 12 kills, four digs and seven blocks, while junior setter Kelly Crain (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) added 23 assists and a match-high 13 digs.

Michelle Robinson paced the Valpo attack with a dozen kills.

CSU continues play in the Popcorn Classic with matches Saturday against Indiana State (11:00 a.m. EDT) and East Tennessee State (6:00 p.m.).
