CLEVELAND -
The Cleveland State women's tennis team will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for a dual match with Buffalo on Friday, October 10, at 7 p.m. The women will try for their second win of the season, which would equal the total number of wins of a year ago. The Viking men's tennis team is off this weekend after opening the dual match season with a split over the weekend, losing to UW-Green Bay and defeating Western Illinois.
About the Viking Women
The women's tennis team opened play on Sept. 20, defeating St. Francis, 6-1. All six Vikings got in on the scoring as CSU took the doubles point and five of the six singles matches. CSU then dropped the league opener to UW-Green Bay on Sept. 29, falling 6-1. Freshman Sarah Galon (Waianae, Hawaii/Leilehua) stands unbeaten on the season, winning both of her singles and doubles matches for a 4-0 mark.
Head Coach Brian Etzkin
In his second season as head coach of the Viking tennis program, Brian Etzkin has compiled a combined record of 13-45 (10-20 men, 3-25 women). Etzkin has been been given the task reviving the men's tennis program, which returned in 2000 after an eight-year hiatus. Prior to his arrival at Cleveland State, Etzkin spent two years as an assistant at Western Illinois before being named an assistant coach at Michigan State. He is assisted by David Howell, in his first season.
About Buffalo
Buffalo is 2-0 on the season after a pair of 7-0 wins against Rochester and St. Francis. The Bulls last competed at the Can-Am Tournament on Sept. 26-28, an individual event without team scoring. Michelle Kollarova leads the squad with a perfect 6-0 mark in singles play. As a team, Buffalo has gone 26-7 in singles matches and 13-3 in doubles play on the season.
Perfect Start
Freshman Sarah Galon has gotten off to a perfect 4-0 start on the season at No. 1 singles. Galon picked up her second win of the season in singles on Sept. 29, defeating UW-Green Bay's Alexis Watson, 6-4, 6-3. Galon is also unbeaten in doubles play with partner Morgan Ungerott (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) at No. 1 doubles.
Veteran Leadership
Coaches always talk about veterans stepping up and leading the way, and the Oct. 5 men's win over Western Illinois illustrated that perfectly. With the Vikings trailing 3-0 in the match, juniors Jordan Reynolds (North Olmsted, Ohio), Eric Winn (Austin, Texas/Westlake) and Paul Haley (San Antonio, Texas/Judson) and sophomore Jay Tee (Davenport, Iowa/Central) each pulled out a victory to give the Vikings their first win of the season. Haley's win came after the others had concluded and clinched the win for CSU.
Up Next
The men and women will host IPFW in the fall season's final dual match on Oct. 19 at the Malaga Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
