Tennis Dominates St. Francis With 4-3 And 7-0 Wins

Oct. 9, 2005

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - The men's and women's tennis teams ended a long day of play Sunday evening by easily defeating St. Francis (Pa.) at the River Oaks Racquet Club 4-3 and 7-0, respectively.

Even after a successful afternoon of play against IPFW, the women Vikings showed no signs of fatigue. Instead, they dominated the court all evening against the Red Flashes, winning all three doubles matches and all six singles matches.

The big win for the women came at the top of the lineup where Sarah Galon upended Ruxandra Ionescu 4-6, 6-3, 14-12.

"We handled St. Francis pretty easily," said Etzkin. "I was very impressed with the team. Despite the long day they came out and were really focused. They weren't going to give up any easy points."

Abby Showalter ,Jenn Myers and Lindsay Sellers each defeated their opponent 6-0, 6-0.

The men's team also started the evening strong with a clean sweep of all three doubles matches. With the doubles point in hand, the Vikings went on to win three of the six singles matches. Senior Jay Tee set the tone for the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kyle Primeau.

"We swept the doubles point which gave us a lot of confidence," said head coach Brian Etzkin . "Then Jay Tee put us 2-0 very quickly with his win against Primeau and Singer quickly put us 3-0 with his match."

Tee has been a driving force behind the team's success on the court all year long.

"Jay Tee went 3-0 in singles and doubles this weekend so he has really stepped up his play this year," said Etzkin. "He is really taking his game to a new level."

Rob West , at No. 2 singles, closed the day with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Andrei Sandu.

Both the men and women played IPFW at the Malaga Tennis Center earlier in the afternoon. A strong performance by Morgan Ungerott in both doubles and singles helped the women defeat the Mastodons 5-2 while the men came up short, losing 5-2.

After a few days rest the men will return to action on Oct. 14 at the Can-Am Tournament in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The women will be off until Oct. 20 where both the men and the women travel to East Lansing, Mich. for the ITA Regional Tournament.
