FORT WAYNE, Ind. - J.J. Thornberry held IPFW to just one run as Cleveland State (7-19) earned a doubleheader split with a 3-1 victory in Monday's nightcap. The Mastodons (6-23) scored all of their runs in the first inning to claim the opener, 4-1. The teams were originally scheduled to meet on March 26, but were postponed due to rain. Thornberry (3-5) put together her best outing of the season, scattering five hits while fanning seven en route to hurling her third complete game of the year. IPFW's Jenna Connelly took the loss to fall to 2-13. Thornberry helped her own cause in the second, lacing a two-out RBI single to put the Vikings up 1-0. She then followed with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to double the margin. After the Mastodons answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, CSU put an insurance run on the board in the sixth courtesy of an IPFW error. In the opener, IPFW touched starter Grace Luginbuhl for five hits and four runs in the bottom of the first. Luginbuhl would give up just one more hit the rest of the way while striking out five, but still took the loss to fall to 3-9. Beth Harmon (4-7) was solid in the circle for the Mastodons. She went the distance, surrendering just four hits and an unearned run while fanning five. Jackie Cornelius went 3-for-5 on the day to pace the Vikings at the plate. After collecting a hit in the opener, Amber Lowe saw her hitting streak come to an end at 14 games with a 0-for-4 performance in game two. Cleveland State returns home to host Ohio on Wednesday, April 13 in a twin bill beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Viking Field. Admission is free of charge. |
