Vikings Fall In Title Game To Hawai'i, 76-55
Dec. 18, 2001 HONOLULU, Hawaii - Hawai'i (7-2) used a 42-18 advantage in the paint en route to defeating Cleveland State, 76-55, to claim the 10th Annual Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic. The Vikings (4-4), who shot just 23.9 percent from the floor, saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. CSU played the Rainbow Wahine tough early on, trailing just 20-17 at the 5:44 mark of the first half. However, Hawai'i closed out the stanza by going on a 17-7 run to take a 37-24 lead into the locker room. The 'Bows used a 55-31 rebound margin to help build the lead to as much as 27 in the second half. "We're a running an shooting team and we can't shoot 23 percent and expect to win," said CSU head coach Duffy Burns. "They took away our best scorer and we didn't have anyone else step up." Sophomore forward Shannon Sword (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) scored a career-high 13 points and pulled down five rebounds to pace the Vikings. Sophomore forward Ashley Schrock (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) also added 13, while sophomore center Karyn Woloszynek (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) finished with 10 points. Despite being held to just two points in the title game, junior guard Erika Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) still earned a spot on the all-tournament team after scoring 36 versus Tennessee State. Tournament MVP Christen Roper scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Hawai'i. Natasja Allen added 20 points for the Rainbow Wahine to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Also earning spots on the all-tournament team were Charlotte's Alicia Abernathy, Tennessee State's LaRissa Thomas and Hawai'i's Karena Greeny. Charlotte defeated Tennessee State in the consolation game to claim third place. Cleveland State is not in action again until Dec. 28 when it hosts Butler at 7:00 p.m. in the Horizon League opener for both schools. |
