Cleveland State Stuns UW-Green Bay, 66-55, In Home Finale

Feb. 16, 2002

Box Score

CLEVELAND - Cleveland State (12-13, 6-8 Horizon League) led from wire to wire en route to defeating league-leading UW-Green Bay (20-6, 14-1 HL), 66-55. The win was just the third in 33 meetings with the Phoenix and snapped UWGB's 14-game winning streak. In addition, it was the first victory for the Vikings when scoring less than 70 points since defeating Bucknell 66-64 on Dec. 28, 1999 (a span of 25 contests).

CSU jumped out to a 15-4 lead just five minutes into the game thanks to five quick points from both junior guard Erika Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and freshman guard Nikki Perkins (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson). The Vikings maintained at least a five-point advantage the rest of the half and took a 32-24 lead into the locker room.

The Phoenix scored the first five points of the second stanza to cut the margin to just three, but CSU responded with a 14-3 run to open up a 14-point bulge with 12 minutes left to play. UWGB could get no closer than six the rest of the way as the Vikings picked up their sixth win in their last eight games and defeated the Phoenix for the second consecutive year in Goodman Arena.

"Words can't express how great this team is - they've done everything we've asked them to and then some," said CSU coach Duffy Burns. "This was truly a team effort. In 21 years of coaching I've never been prouder of a team."

The Phoenix, which entered the contest ranked seventh in the nation in field goal percentage (49.1), was held to a season-low 34.5 percent from the floor. Meanwhile, CSU canned 45.7 percent of its shots, while owning a 20-9 margin in made free throws.

"We played very tentative," noted UWGB coach Kevin Borseth. "Cleveland State has got our number. We struggle against their zone for whatever reason."

Roudebush scored a game-high 23 points, while leading the Vikings with four assists and four steals. CSU is now 9-2 this season when she scores 20 or more points. Sophomore forward Ashley Schrock (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) and Perkins joined Roudebush in double-figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore center Karyn Woloszynek (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) led all players with a career-high 13 rebounds.

Junior guard Sara Boyer paced UWGB with 12 points, while guards Elizabeth Dudley and Amanda Leonhard added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Cleveland State is in action again on Thursday, Feb. 21 when it travels to Loyola Chicago for a 7:00 p.m. CST contest.
