Vikings Fall To Illinois-Chicago, 53-44
Jan. 10, 2002
CLEVELAND - It was deja vu all over again for Cleveland State (6-7, 2-2 Horizon League), as the Vikings shot just 21.6 percent (11-for-51) from the field en route to losing to Illinois-Chicago, 53-44, Thursday night in Goodman Arena. CSU shot just 26 percent in Monday's loss to Wright State. The Vikings' 44 points were the fewest they had scored in a game since Feb. 18, 1990, when UW-Green Bay defeated CSU, 66-36. "We got every look we wanted, we just didn't make them," noted CSU head coach Duffy Burns. "The best thing about tonight was that we competed for 40 minutes and we defended well." The Vikings could muster just a pair of three-pointers in the first half on 27 field goal attempts (7.4 percent) and trailed, 28-14, at the break. UIC (10-7, 2-3 HL) pushed the lead to 19 at the 13:28 mark of the second stanza, only to see CSU battle back to trim the margin to 45-37 with five minutes remaining. However, the Flames converted all six of their free throw attempts down the stretch to preserve the win. Freshman guard Maria Rickards (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) was the only Viking in double-figures with 11 points. Sophomore center Karyn Woloszynek (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) added seven rebounds and a career-high four steals for CSU. UIC junior center Jaysie Chambers led all players with 12 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Consuela Hall added 10 points for the Flames. UIC offset 24 turnovers by shooting 40 percent from the floor and by out-rebounding the Vikings, 45-31. CSU was without the services of seniors Kim Brockway (Marine City, Mich./Marine City) and Tonya Crum (Lodi, Wis./Sun Prairie), who are serving suspensions for violating the CSU Student-Athlete Conduct Code. Cleveland State is in action again on Saturday, Jan. 12 when it travels to Detroit for a 2:30 p.m. match-up in Calihan Hall. |
