Eastern Wrestling League Honors Viking Grappler

Nov. 22, 2002

CLEVELAND - Cleveland State University's Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) has been named the EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 17, 2002, the league office announced Thursday (11/21).

A senior, Mansueto captured the 125-pound title at the rugged 2002 SUNY Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Showcase Wrestling Classic on November 16, helping the Vikings to a third-place finish behind Oklahoma and Ohio State.

In the final, Mansueto faced highly-ranked Bo Maynes of Oklahoma. In the first period Maynes got the initial takedown and put about 90 seconds riding time on the clock before Mansueto escaped. Maynes chose down to start the second period and Mansueto rode him the entire period. Mansueto took down to start the third period and then escaped to make the match score 2-2. He went after Maynes, but could not take him down before regulation ended. In overtime, Maynes, who had the initial takedown, selected down for the sudden-death period, and Mansueto rode him out for the victory.

En route to the championship match, Mansueto also hammered out a pin and posted two major decisions.

Mansueto, who currently is ranked 12th by TheWrestlingMall.com, 13th by WrestlingReport.com and 14th by Amateur Wrestling News, has placed fourth, second and third at the past three EWL Tournaments, respectively.
