Wrestling One Of Top Academic Teams Nationally
May 12, 2005 The Cleveland State wrestling team has been ranked as one of the National Wrestling Coaches Association's All-Academic Top 30 Teams following the 2004-05 season, the NWCA announced on Tuesday (May 10). The Vikings posted a 2.9917 cumulative grade point average to rank tied for 18th with Harvard.
"It's getting to be expected for us to perform well in the classroom and on the mat," head coach Jack Effner said. "It's a very prestigious honor for us, especially when you combine our academics with taking five or six wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament like we have for the past three years. This program is heading in the right direction."
CSU again continued a tradition of success on the mat in 2004-05, as Joe Dennis, Marcus Effner, Ron Howard, Ryan Hurley and Joe Phillips qualified for the NCAA Championships, the fourth-straight season four or more Vikings have qualified. In addition, Dennis and Effner were both named Eastern Wrestling League Wrestlers of the Week during the year, with Dennis claiming EWL Freshman of the Year honors.
The wrestling team has finished in the top 20 nationally in GPA in each of Effner's seven seasons at the helm. The team had its highest ranking in 2000, when it finished seventh out of nearly 100 programs.
