CSU's Gerald Harris Get 100th Career Victory At Wendy's Duals

Jan. 13, 2003

CLEVELAND - Senior Gerald Harris (Tulsa, Okla./East Central) picked up the 100th win of his career at the Wendy's Duals at Ashland University Sunday as #24 Cleveland State finished 2-1 at the meet.

Harris, who ranked fourth nationally at 23-3, garnered the plateau victory in CSU's first match against UT-Chattanooga. Although Harris lost his next match, 3-2, to Indiana's Ty Matthews, he bounced back against Purdue in his final match to beat Ben Wissel 5-3 and take his career mark to 101-37. He is 11 wins shy of equalling the CSU record for victories of 112 set by All-American Toby Matney from 1976-79.

"I'm very, very happy for Gerald," said CSU Head Coach Jack Effner. "He's been a very consistant performer since his arrival here and 100 wins is a testament to that.

"In any sport, 100 wins means something and it is a mark that will keep him in the record books for a long time."

Against UT-Chattanooga, Cleveland State raced out to a 16-0 lead as #11 Phil Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) at 133 and Matt Shultz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) at 141 posted technical falls and then coasted to a 34-10 win.

In addition, #17 Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) and Anthony Coleman (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) recorded wins at 125 and 149, respectively. Stipe Miocic (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) and Russ Davie (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) were awarded forfeit victories at 197 and heavyweight, respectively, for the Vikings' final points.

A nip-and-tuck affair with #23 Indiana University came down to the heavyweight match for CSU and Davie provided the Vikings with a 21-15 victory in their second dual of the day. With the match tied at 15-all, Davie pinned IU's Joel Powers in 1:49 to give CSU the mild upset of the Big Ten school.

IU went up 3-0 after #12 Joe Dubuque beat Rocco Mansueto 8-4 at 125 but Phil Mansueto downed Greg Schaefer 3-2 at 133 to even the score at 3-all.

The Hoosiers regained the lead after Coyte Cooper pinned Paul Theodore (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) at 141 but then CSU tallied four straight decisions by Anthony Coleman at 149, Chris Kallai (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) at 157, Jason Effner (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield) at 165 and Ron Howard (Cincinnati, Ohio/Finneytown) at 174 to move ahead 15-9.

However, the Vikes lost two close decisions at 184 and 197 and the Hoosiers tied things up at 15-all to set up Davie's dramatic finish.

Cleveland State suffered just its fourth dual meet loss of the season when #12 Purdue University pinned the Vikings 24-12 in their final match. CSU closed out the dual strong with three straight wins, but won just one of the first seven matches. At 133, Phil Mansueto beat Rene Hernandez 9-4 to put CSU on the board but the Vikes would have to wait until Harris's 184-pound match to see another victory.

Then Miocic scored a 12-10 upset over #12 Jon Bush at 197 before Davie closed out the scoring with a 5-1 win over Israel Blevins at heavyweight.

The Vikings return to action on Thursday, Jan. 16 when they travel to the University of Pittsburgh for a 7:30 p.m. Eastern Wrestling League matchup
