CLEVELAND, Ohio - Host Cleveland State placed sixth in the team standings and landed three wrestlers in the NCAA Championships at the EWL Championships, which concluded on Sunday at Woodling Gym. CSU, which had a dual meet record of 10-5, finished with 77.5 points. Edinboro won its fifth straight team title with 113 points.

Although no Viking made it to Sunday afternoon's championship final, junior Ryan Hurley (27-11 at 149) and sophomores Victer Crenshaw (26-9) and Rashard Goff (25-15 at 285) were each voted into the national tournament as wild card selections. The top two finishers in each weight gained automatic NCAA berths in addition to 12 wild cards and three alternates.

"I glad we got three guys in the NCAA Championships, but we could've done better at the EWL tournament," head coach Jack Effner said.

Hurley placed third at 149, rebounding from an overtime loss to West Virginia's David Jaregui on Saturday to win both of his bouts in the consolation bracket. Hurley defeated Clarion's Hadley Harrison (5-2) and Bloomsburg's Matt Moley (3-1) to finish in the top half of the bracket and gain an NCAA bid. Crenshaw won the fifth place bout at 157 in style, pinning Bloomsburg's Dennis Bermudez in the second period. Goff captured two hard-fought decisions over West Virginia's Dustin Rodgers (5-1) and Joe Fendone (3-2). Goff had previously lost to both Rodgers and Fendone in the regular season.

Sophomore Chris Hahn (15-7 at 197) was selected as one of the league's three alternate wrestlers for the NCAA Championships after placing fourth at 197 pounds.

Sophomore Marcus Effner (25-15) placed third at 165, posting a 14-4 major decision against Clarion's Mario Morellis and then defeating Ricky Schmelyun of Bloomsburg 7-4. Junior Ryan Riggs placed fifth at 125 pounds and fellow juniors David Armstrong (17-12 at 133) and Michael Hurley (20-11at 141) finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Senior David Gilkey (17-18) placed sixth at 184 pounds in his last event as a Viking.

Ryan Hurley, Crenshaw and Goff will compete at the NCAA Championships at the Palace of Auburn Hills March 15-17. It marks the 43rd consecutive year CSU has been represented at the national tournament.
