CLEVELAND, Ohio - The semi-final round was not kind to Cleveland State as all six Vikings who advanced in the first round lost during Saturday's Session II at Woodling Gym. After heading into Session II second in the team standings, CSU falls to sixth with 45 points. West Virginia, who has five wrestlers in Sunday's championships, leads with 84.5 points.

The top two wrestlers in each weight class automatically gain one of the EWL's 32 NCAA Championships bids. After those 20, the coaches will vote on 12 wild cards. The wild card meeting will take place after Session III on Sunday afternoon.

With automatic bids to the NCAA Championships on the line, none of the six Viking wrestlers who won their first round match could win their second. Junior 133-pounder David Armstrong, who knocked off Bloomsburg's Ricky Donald in Session I, fell, 8-7, to upstart Mark Anderson from West Virginia. Anderson, who is now 12-14, after winning twice on Saturday, was not seeded heading into the tournament. Armstrong (14-10 at 133) will take on Lock Haven's Nick Hyatt for a chance to wrestle in the third place bout on Sunday.

Junior Mike and Ryan Hurley, who each won in impressive fashion in their respective first round bouts, each lost to a wrestler from West Virginia. Mike (20-10 at 141) lost by tech fall in 6:33 to top-seeded Brandon Rader and Ryan (25-11) fell, 8-6, in overtime to WVU's David Jaregui. Ryan Hurley led his match 5-2 in the final minute before Jaregui rallied with an escape and a takedown.

Sophomore Marcus Effner (21-15 at 165) and senior David Gilkey (17-18 at 184) each found hard luck against Edinboro wrestlers, as Effner was pinned by Edinboro's Deonte Penn in 2:21 and Gilkey dropped a 14-5 major decision to Alex Clemsen.

Sophomores Chris Hahn (15-6 at 197) also fell in the semifinals, losing 6-2 to another Edinboro wrestler, Jim Gibson. as Hahn controlled all seven minutes of his bout against Bloomsburg's PJ DiStefano in a 13-6 win and Effner edged Bloomsburg's Ricky Schmelyun, 3-2, in the final period.

Junior Ryan Riggs (11-13 at 125) and sophomores Victer Crenshaw (25-8 at 157) and Rashard Goff (23-15 at 285) each lost in the opening round but received byes in the consolation bracket.

Session III of the tournament is set for Sunday beginning at 10:00 a.m. continues with consolation bouts and the winners' bracket semi-finals tonight at 6:00 p.m. at Woodling Gym.
