Lock Haven Tops Vikings, 25-20

Feb. 6, 2005

CLEVELAND - Cleveland State picked up wins in five bouts against Lock Haven on Sunday (Feb. 6) afternoon, but a pair of Bald Eagle pins spelled the difference as the Vikings dropped a 25-20 decision at Woodling Gym. CSU drops to 0-3 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while Lock Haven improves to 1-1.

The visiting Bald Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead after Rory McCoy tallied a 13-0 major decision over sophomore David Gilkey at 165.

Senior Matt Klinger brought the Vikings back to within one with a decision at 174. Klinger fell behind 2-0 after Carlos Ponce scored a take-down late in the first period at 174. With Ponce ahead 3-1 in the third, Klinger escaped, earned a stalling point to tie the score and scored a reversal to take a 5-3 win and bring the team scoring to 4-3.

A Lock Haven forfeit at 184 put CSU in front 9-4, but Morgan Horner pinned Joe Phillips at 1:36 of the 197 match to put the Eagles on top at 10-9. Joe Dennis, however, would respond at heavyweight, scoring a five-point tech fall at 6:20 over Jamie Nagel after recording three near falls.

The Eagles responded in the 125 bout, with Obe Blanc pinning freshman Joe Wornoff in 4:34, but freshman David Armstrong notched a strong win at 133. Scoreless through one period, Armstrong escaped to open the second period and then recorded a takedown with 15 seconds remaining in the second and an additional takedown in the third for a 6-1 win with the riding time point.

CSU forfeit the 141 match to put the Eagles back in front at 22-17. Sophomore Ryan Hurley wrestled a tough bout at 149, but Josh Medina scored a pair of takedowns in the final period for an 8-4 win and a 25-17 Lock Have advantage. Freshman Marcus Effner concluded the match with a 4-2 decision at 157, but the Eagles advantage was too much to overcome.

"We've had three EWL matches so far and they've all had the same outcome," head coach Jack Effner said. "It's real frustrating. We lost the close matches, and getting pinned didn't help us either. We were counting on a couple of guys to step up and wrestle the way they are capable of, but it hasn't happened yet."

The Vikings head to Edinboro on Friday (Feb. 11) when they battle the EWL-leading Fighting Scots at 8:00 p.m.
